Datejust II black roman dial

I have been enjoying the Datejust for the last week. I am curious if anyone here would know why the black dial has a "stick" in the 9 position instead of a Roman numeral. The black dial is the only colr that comes this way.

That was my only holdout when I bought mine too. My guess is that they figured it would break up the dial a little bit so it didn't look too cluttered? I wish they went with the applied white gold roman numerals and not these ones.

Agree that it detracts from the stick dials and the slate/roman dial as well.

I personally like it for some reason.

But I have been encouraged to attend various mental health clinics from time to time.

Don't care........... I LIKE IT!!!!

I just purchased a datejust II with blue Arabic numerals. I wanted the black face but that stick marker at 9 made me change my mind. I have no idea why they would do that with the black face but the blue roman does not have it. Great question, something I've always wanted to know myself.

It's not that I don't like it. I intially thought i would of liked the solid Roman numerals. But the outlined white gold with black infil read very subtle which is really nice. I was wondering if the stick was for providing lume glow at night in the 9 location to help orient the hands. I figure a compan as technical as Rolex must have a reason for this.

Mine says hello, sans the stick figure on the left which is covered by my sweater.

I really love this watch! I really like the shade of blackish grey....I recently bought a SS Daytona and am thinking flipping it for this one. Tha Daytona looks a little small on my wrist, and I already have a DJII in light blue with romans. Im torn though on the fluted versus smooth bezel, but will most likely go with the smooth version. The fluted is a bit blingy for me and I love the clean look of my current one which has the smooth bezel.

oh yeah, Rolex also did that same numeral replacement on the DJII grey dial with green Romans. Not sure why....

My guess is to balance the dial with the white date window at the 3 o'clock position. I don't like it.

Yea....I think the blackish grey is beautiful. There is something so iconic about the fluted bezel. The bling factor is low with the white gold. If you have a smooth try the fluted. Quite an upcharge for the fluted i guess due to the WG.

My guess is there are number markers under Roman numerals like where the VI is and Rolex wanted to make a different in dials given that solid gold Roman dial and chrome Roman numerals with the blue dial has no luminescent feature as well

It would certainly make sense to get the fluted being I have the smooth. I'll need to see both a time or two to decide. For some reason I'm really drawn to the smooth bezel. Congrats on yours!

I always assumed it was to be used as a point of reference in the dark. Since the hands have are luminescent, that might be their way of getting lume on the dial? Regardless, I always thought it looked out of place.

I stopped by the Rolex Boutique in Beverly Hills today and asked them about the stick dial. The two popular theories her are correct according to the sales person. Balance the date with the stick and use the stick as a reference point when reading the watch in the dark. They mentioned the black dial DJII is one of the more popular models in awhile.

My thoughts too but I like the way it balances the dial with the date window.
