Fake watch sold in a respectable Rolex shop?

A young man came to my local AD in Reykjavik with a Submariner he had bought in New York. He wanted the owner to look at it and confirm its authenticity. The owner saw at once that it was fake. The young man was shocked, because he had bought it at (what he said) a respectable Rolex shop. He said the salesmen wore nice suits and wore white gloves. Everything seemed to be in order. He paid $5.500 for it. This was in the news. I include the link to the story. Even though you canīt read Icelandic, you can see the pics. I can hardly believe that he was in a Rolex AD shop. Here is the link:

well if it was at a "respectable Rolex shop" they would have no problem giving him his money back

+1

Here at a local AD, I know a salesman that I've bought a couple of rolexes from and he's told me that a lot of youngsters come in and try to "trade in" good quality replica's to use it towards buying their jewelry or watches. he told me that some have even brought subs with the "warranty" card in which serial numbers don't match up and the reference number is from a datejust or some other model.

It's amazing how many people out there try to scam others... Especially going to an AD. It's ridicuous

I don't believe he bought it from a Rolex AD.

But if the salesmen wore nice suits and wore white gloves then, I'm not sure how this could of happened...

Perhaps he bought it in an upmarket restaurant.

I can't read Icelandic but looking at the article and some of the watches I now know what falsad means.

Caveat Emptor. Anything other than a Rolex AD or a very trusted seller involves risk. Everyone's risk tolerance is different. Mine is low when it comes to expensive watches.

Anybody can tell a story and I suspect that the young man is doing just that. It is highly unlikely that the he bought his watch from a "respected Rolex shop".

I think that the final clue here is that he felt the need to take his new watch in to be "authenticated".

There is no chance that he bought that watch from an AD. More than likely, he bought it from a not so respectable jewelry shop that knowingly sells fake watches. Any respectable jeweler would be able to spot that as a fake right away.

All he has to do is produce the receipt from where he bought it (to prove it was an AD) and check that the serial number on that matches his "fake". Job done
