Want to add a 5513 to collection

I want to obtain a 5513 for my collection. I’m looking at (2) watches right now.

1- A 5513 dated 1978, maxi dial, tritium markers, lightly polished, full set. Price 21 to 23K
2- A 5513 dated 1986, maxi dial, gold surround tritium markers, lightly polished, and full set. Price 12 to 14K.

Which one would you buy, and why? Looking at investment return, which one would return more “in percent” in the next 5-10 years?

Any and all input would be highly appreciated.

Come on! Do you really think anyone knows the answer? Do you even like watches? Which one do you like better?
You said any and all input appreciated, here’s mine.....

Watch collecting is a hobby, not a retirement plan. Stocks and real estate are for investing. Pick a watch you like, that you can afford, and enjoy it. Any appreciation should be viewed as a bonus. If you are purchasing a watch with the need for it to retain value or appreciate, you shouldn’t be buying it.
My opinion

I wasn’t looking for an answer, just input. It’s already established that me and others look at our watch collection as a hobby foremost and monetary appreciation secondary. I won’t take your bait regarding do I even like watches....Thanks for you input.

This is your question, but you say you aren’t looking for an answer!?

Looks like I am the one who took the bait. Notice how eager everyone is to respond to your query?
This place has gotten unreal !

Full set mid 80’s 5513 for half the price of the maxi dial ? I would jump on the the 1986 model personally plus I am more biased towards that 80s era.

If the second has white gold surrounding the Tritium markers, it is not a maxi-dial but rather the gloss dial late version that continued up to the end of 5513 production. The prices of these are considerably less than maxi-dials. I have one of these late versions and love it. I'm not interested in the future value of my watches so can't help there, although the late gloss dials will never attract the same prices as the maxi-dials.

I would buy the 1978 but only because to me matte dial is the main reason for going vintage. A WG surround dial is too close to a 14060 and don't see the reason in paying a premium for that.

Thanks for catching that. The 86 isn’t Maxi and it is also gloss dial. You make some good points.

You make a good point...I am leaning in that direction. Thanks!

For the life of me I can’t understand why it offends someone to the point of boorishness that a buyer might want to factor a classic/vintage watch’s potential for appreciation into his purchasing decision. I have an opinion, therefore I must share it with the world.

I'd go for the 1978, although 23 grand seems a bit steep even with box and papers...

Always buy the best you can afford. It might end up as a winning investment, or it might turn out you bought at the peak of the bubble. Either way, you'll have something nice on your wrist to enjoy all day, every day.

Please post photos of each watch. That's the only way to get meaningful responses. There are so many variables to the two watches you describe.

For example, one person's idea of a "light polish" on the case might not be the same for everyone else. And what about patina, which is a huge factor on vintage Rolexes? No way to give good advice without seeing the watches.

I really like WG 5513s. They're like matte 16800s to me just in the opposite direction. Very cool transitional reference that I think is under appreciated.

Why don't you just backtest?

Go look at what various models were selling for 10 years ago and are today. There is a lot of archived sales listings across various forums.

I would say in general... that the 1978 watch is more collectible and will perform better.

I am not a big fan of the WG surrounds 80s version of the 5513 or the transitional era of Rolex in general.

Ok. Since I’m now leaning toward the Matt Maxi dial 5513’s here are (2) that I am considering. The 1st a 1978 (2 pics) the 2nd a 1982 (2 pics).

Both look to be in great shape, I like the 1982 model. How much is the seller asking for them ? Full sets ?

1978=23K
1982=25K

Both are full sets, and nice, but different. I think I would be happy with either one. Just gotta get past the sticker shock.

There was a sweet full set unpolished 1982 5513 that Jacek had sold on here just the other day that made me think of this thread.

I guess this is the type of buyer that drives the market up. Willing to pay any amount since he thinks it is an investment. Please do some serious research on auction prices before buying.

I own a 1968 (birth year) 5513. The prices seem to have gone crazy these past 8-12 months. You’re paying over double what they were at 12 months ago, so I don’t see personally how value retention could be achieved. However, I could be wrong, these are certainly crazy days with Rolex.
