Icon10 AP Royal Oak Chrono or TT Black Dial Daytona

Hello Everyone,

First post, i am looking for some help.

I have just put deposit on a 115603 Black daytona (2018) and can pick up this week, but the grey market dealer has just brought in a AP RO (2017) blue dial chrono which has took my breath away.

I have a hublot big bang black magic and a two tone GMT Master 2, and I want to sell these two and buy the Royal Oak Chrono, and ditch the Daytona which i was going to swap my GMT Master 2 for plus some extra cash.

Can anyone help out with what i should do, i know the AP is flashy as hell when caught with the light.

can it be a daily wearer? office/leisure/weekends away ?

i am quite clumsy also, and i dont want to damage the RO.

any help would be appreciated.

I disagree that the AP is more flash than a Daytona. Daytona’s are great looking chronographs but the case design wears quite small and for that reason I think of it as a watch that actually looks better on women than men, at least that was my experience when my wife started wearing mine and I started wearing AP.

You can also get the Royal Oak case refinished.

If your breath was taken away then you have to have it. I'd have a cheapie like a G shock for times when you might be rough otherwise you can wear the ROC most of the time.

I sold my black Daytona within a year for three reasons. First, Rolex does not apply anti-reflective coating on the crystal (unlike AP and Patek), so the black dial often reflects 100% and acts as a mirror, rendering the dial totally unreadable. Second, the screw-down pushers are annoying. Three, there is no way the Daytona can live up to the hype. IMHO it needs a true refresh, not just the addition of a ceramic bezel.

Blue ROC! but in the end it's what you want that matters most.

You lose so much money trading with a dealer brother, just buy what you want and keep your other pieces.

Go for the Roc

I have a 16518 daytona and a ss roc black 26320. Both beautiful, but the roc is a great sport watch.

There is no comparison between those two watches. The AP is just so much nicer in every aspect. The Dayto may be a better daily though but the AP can be refinished, bezel can be replaced etc.

No contest, ROC hands down. I was bored of the Daytona I had in a few days, as someone noted earlier, it wears pretty small - even with my 6.5" wrist.

I agree that the legibility is not great on the Daytona. I've owned two in the past (black 116520 and white 16520). I loved the fit (6.5" wrist) and comfort, but in the end I had a hard time reading the time and wanted a date function. So now I rotate between a rose gold ROC and a steel Aquanaut. Both have scratches but I love wearing them on a daily basis. Depending on your financial situation, I'd actually consider trading/selling the GMT and keep the Hublot for weekends or situations where you don't feel comfortable wearing the AP.

AP. Just better in my view than the Daytona even though a Daytona is sort of a must have piece....

Since you asked for advice I'll give it:

First of all, get rid of that Hublot (OK, the Big Bang Black Magic is quiet for being a Hublot but still, it has a chavvish feeling to it).

The AP Chrono is a great piece, but please make sure it is comfortable on your wrist. Personally, Royal Oaks don't work too well on my wrist above 39mm size. Additionally, it is a great piece if you truly love the design, history of the brand, etc. It will attract a lot of scratches, if that is a concern - don't get it. I'd say just wear the heck out of it and ignore dings and dents.

The AP while quite sturdy isn't a Rolex. The movement beats at 21,600 vph which is more "haute horology" but is harder to tune to accuracy. A Rolex Daytona movement (caliber 4130) is more of a workhorse. Moreover, the AP will cost more to service down the road.

Lastly, you don't seem to be into subtle watches. A bicolor Daytona or GMT will stand out, so does a Hublot, but I guess the AP will do so less.

My money would be to get a minty Daytona 116520 with black or white dial. Combines the best of what you want - chronograph, sturdy, good enough to use 24/7/365 (but a scratch magnet as well).

Rant off.

No matter what the circumstances were, I would've gotten rid of the Hublot.

Congrats on your decision.

Well said! Also to consider, ROC is non hackable while Daytona is.
