John Mayer is Wrong, Sleeper Hits?

A "Sleeper Hit" to me means that it's going to be worth significantly more than retail price, over time. A WG, blue face Daytona, and a YG green face Daytona.

JM is great, one of my favorite musicians ever, and he has an incredible collection. But the majority of his rare Daytona's were released before he was born. He's also buying them at extremely high prices to begin with, sure they may still go up in value but it's not that hard to look at Apple Stock 5 years ago and think yah that's a good buy. Buying a Zenith Daytona today is a good buy...but not that many people are spending 30k+ on a SS Daytona.

Now to the WG and YG Daytona's. Colors are nothing new to Rolex, and not neccesarily new to Daytona. Unless there is something significantly rare about a PM piece, it's not going to hold value. Today you can buy a YG Zenith Daytona for around the same price as a ceramic Daytona. In 2-3 years, the Zenith's price will be miles ahead.

I love both of those Daytona's and have considered purchasing both multiple times (and the White gold I've seen at 25-28k several times) but Sleeper Hit? To imply that something has been looked over and will be of high demand, low supply and very valuable in the future...it's just not true.

The only blue face Daytona's that will / is worth significantly more than retail price: The Indian Script / Arabic Platinum Daytona and the Chairman Daytona.

"Sleeper Hit" normally refers to something that becomes popular through word of mouth. Future value isn't a factor.

In the watch world, you have the Seiko SKX007 at one end of the scale and the Newman Daytona at the other.

This is the kind of randomness that is highly sought after by the editors of the LSAT.

I'm not so sure, I feel like that's more underrated. I think the most often time sleeper is used would be in sports. In fantasy for example a sleeper is someone who is going to be the best points wise, but you get for "cheap" because no one else wants it / them.

If he means, these were the two best things Rolex brought out at Basel 2016 other than the ceramic Daytona....eh

Here’s one Phillips auctioned off last year.

Chiboy, you were in the same room as the Chairman when you viewed the PNPN Daytona.

Hahaha! You can see I was a little distracted! You must have gone to the same viewing! Did you go on Saturday morning or the “official” day?

I was the first one through the door on opening day. They hadn’t finished setting up yet . It was an incredible showing and I immediately shouted out about the event to anyone on the forums close enough to pay a visit.

OP, sorry for highjacking the thread. Here’s a close up pic of the Chairman.

We live in a world in which we’re inducted to believe that if ‘SOMEONE’ tell us something... we MUST believe him ‘cause what he says it’s real for sure.
I don’t mind what JM says at all, given that is a Rolex Comex owner and he doesn’t know the story of SDs...
People must think (and like, above all) with their own mind

The green Daytona is pretty hard to get for a pm watch, even before the video was released... So not sure what you're getting at.

I always thought it meant something that wasn’t all that popular to begin with but at some point people wake up and start liking. Hence it’s been slept on for a while.

Ah yes! Now I remember your name! You were indeed the one who turned me on to the exhibit. Read about it the morning we were leaving for L.A. for a wedding, and was able to go that Saturday. The watch exhibit highlight of my life! Thanks again.

Well it has nothing to do with John Mayer. I'd say the same for the wg blue. But wg sports models rarely do good. They depreciate hard.

Some examples

Wg ym 2
Wg subc
Wg skyd
Wg Daytona
And soon wg ym 42.

Well, I think JM is a DB.

He can have all the "sleepers" he wants.
