Would you?

I've been in love with the 116619 Smurf for some time but can't justify the expense of adding another watch of that caliber to the collection without getting rid of something. Since I don't want to sell one of the watches I already own, I've been considering the blue Tudor Pelagos which is a similar shade of blue and affordable enough to justify adding. Then I saw this Rolex that just popped up for sale. It's a 116610 with a custom blue dial and insert. My question is would you rather own the Tudor or the modified Rolex?

Frankly, if you did, you might regret it. I see that a certain website seems to have a lot of "custom" dial (and bezel) 5-digit subs, which seem to be vaguely masquerading as 5-digit interpretations of 6-digit Hulks and Smurfs.

[Insert pun about pretenders to the crown here]

Tudor looks phenomenal and I wouldn’t view it as a lesser watch in any regard.

That said in your situation I’d probably wait, consolidate and save for 116619. In my experience every time I’m faced with “I can’t get X so I’ll get Y instead” the Y never scratches the itch for X.

Having recently viewed/worn a 116619 I think you would regret getting the modified Rolex. The 116619 is about stealth wealth IMO as only a few know that it isn’t SS but WG. The weight difference gold adds is unmistakable. Personally I would squirm if someone noticed it as what would you say - it’s not a 116619 and you will struggle to sell it on.

I'm not a fan of modifying a Rolex that extensively. I'd stick with the Tudor.

I definitely would not buy that watch. Maybe it’s just me but I think that dial is fake. Swiss T-25 ???? Who knows what else was changed.

Buy the Tudor.

I like the looks of the blue dial sub you posted. If you plan on keeping it forever hell yes I would. But if you ever try to trade or sell you will most likely get beat up on the price.

I would pass on the modified sub. If you don’t really want the Tudor, just save until you have the funds for the 619.

That is not a 116610, irrespective of modification. Did you mistype that?

Do what I did, get a Blue Pelagos AND a 116613lb..... :)

Still way cheaper than a smurf, although I really want one.

EDIT - added, go Tudor all the way. Sometimes I feel it was better than the 114060 I had before the bluesy.

If you really want a Smurf, nothing else will do it. Not a modified Sub Date and not a Tudor. You can buy either or even both, but you'll still want that Smurf.

Once you’ll see Pelagos, you’ll love it.
Go for Tudor! Very comfortable to wear and something different if you already have a Rolex or few Rolexes...

Modified Rolex will be hard to sell if you don't end up loving it.

Blue Pelagos is super handsome. It is also a bit larger. Try it out.

Pelagos over the abomination every day of the week.

I love the blue Pelagos; it’s a hell of a watch.

But it’s not a Smurf.

So, either save and save for the Smurf or get the Pelagos and just enjoy that. Just don’t buy that stupid mod.

Not a fan of mods. Tried the Tudor pelagos route but I kept lusting after the 619. Save and get the one your heart is set on. Just my experience.
