Depends. Either complement the wearer or just enjoy seeing them

Last guy i saw had a white daytona. I said “hey man love the daytona”, he said “huh?”. I said “your daytona, i like it”, he said “huh?” I said “your watch is a daytona” he says “oh yeah, thanks” Not a rewarding conversation...

Was in a bar in London the other day, in the banking district. Guy leans over says to me, like your watch (Oyster Perpetual Datejust), he had a black Submariner on. I just said thanks and returned to my drink haha.

Living in Southern California, a Rolex is about as rare as as nice cars.......seemingly everybody has one. Most people aren't like the folks here on TRF so if you say something to them, other than in a watch store, they'll think your weird.

For my answer it was a toss up between "Pretend that you didn't notice the other Rolex wearer's watch and mind your own business" and "Both of you see each other's watches, but pretend that you don't"
I had to go with the latter in the end. While I am effectively minding my own business by pretending I don't notice, deep down we both know that we have but pretend we don't. Over here in Bangkok most people wear short sleeves the vast majority of the time so I always notice when people are wearing one I just don't say anything about it.

So true. I generally just gawk and not say anything because you’re right, people will just think you’re weird. I grew up in Orange County, CA and love visiting home because I always see a wide variety of nice watches when I visit. I often see a wide variety on the plane to LAX or SNA. |

Don't usually say anything , but if I'm out with the wife it's usually her who spots someone wearing a Rolex ,and asks me what model it is . I did say to a guy once on holiday a few years back that his red sub was lovely , and he said if you don't go away I'm calling the police . So I don't comment to anyone on their watch anymore ,unless I know them .

I tend to follow them for a while, 'till we're somewhere quiet.
Then I hit them over the head, say; "nice watch" rip it from their wrist and make my escape. I then photo' it, post the pix on here and everyone says; "nice watch". I do laugh....in a nice way. |

Someone posted on here quite a while back that they commented on a person's watch by reference name. I forget which one but it was something along the lines of:
'Hey, nice Daytona'. 'Excuse me?' 'Your watch, nice Daytona.' 'No, it's a Rolex.' It might've been a Sub, DD, whatever, but you get the gist.

I live in Hong Kong, most people I know have a Rolex, so I would be a madman if I approached every Tom, Dick and Harry and complemented on their watch. That being said, if I saw someone with a vintage or a rare model, I tend to give a compliment

I do look, but rarely if ever initiate a conversation. Many people buy a high end watch to prove their socio-economic status, but know nothing about watches and could care less.
So I will furtively look to check things out, but would be hard pressed to say anything. Some people are defensive because they may think that you are setting them up to steal it. |

Yes, I'm more likely to go this way with a Rolex altho on another more obscure brand I might say, nice watch. My best story on this was I was at a gourmet Chinese restaurant for a friend's birthday and I spotted the guy paying the bill at the table next to us was wearing an IWC chrono. I looked at it for a while to ascertain which model exactly and then I heard my friends tutting and so I had to say, "No I wasn't looking at his bill, I was looking at his watch. It's an IWC." "A what?" they all replied in glorious predictable unison.
