So I just got a rolex for a gift and have several questions.

So my mother bless her soul, bought me a 2008 DateJust 116234 for my 30th B-day. So this being my first Rolex it seems kinda small. I know nothing about Rolex's. I'm a BIG Big guy and this watch seems small to me. I know my mother said to the sales person that I was big guy but the sales person seems to have sold her an intermediate sized watch. Can anyone verify this for me. Thanks Tom.

Rolex

It's not the size of the man...

The new DJ are 36mm. For some that is a decent size but for others it may seem like a small case. The sport models are 40mm but other companies make much larger watches. I wear a 40mm Longines on a daily basis and that has began to seem a bit small. 10 years ago your new DJ would have been average and 20 years ago it would have been on the larger size unless you were wearing a pilot's watch.

Welcome to TRF!

The 116234 is a men's size. It is 36 MM watch.

Here my grail DJ 116234 with a silver dial:

The Rolex Datejust is a full size mans watch and comes in a 36mm case with a 30mm dial...

The Sport models are slightly bigger with a 40mm case, but the dial size is about the same at ~30mm too... this would be the largest size for a Rolex with the exception of the YM II Regatta.

Whether you think it is too small is usually a matter of what you have been wearing...

my apologies

I certainly did not want to seem offensive in my comment. I was more laughing at the "size" reference I made in the opening.

Congrats on your new watch!

Daughter bought me a SS DJ for Xmas and as I'm 6'5" @265 I thought it was a bit small compared to some other watches I've had. Gotten used to it and looks perfect to me now.

And whoever was the guy that said it's better to give than receive never got a Rolex as a gift.

Great gift. It is a men's watch. However, the "sport" models, like the Submariner are bigger and more rugged. I am a big guy (6' 4" 275) and I love my Submariners. I guess you have to weigh a slightly bigger and more rugged watch against the sentimental value of a gift from mom. She did give it to you but I am sure would want you have and wear for 30 years or more. Check at Rolex shops and/or ask her about a swap (if you find one you like better).

No no. I am keeping this watch. I really like it. The whole thing has just overwhelmed me thats all. I had never handled a DJ or any Rolex in person. And I just did not know what to expect.

This whole thing started 6 months ago when my mother was over at my house and she saw me looking at Rolex's on Ebay. She said I should get myself one and I said that I just might. Well anyway time went buy and I never did buy myself one. In fact, I soon just forgot all about them. Call it a passing interest or something

This brings us to this past saturday. I stop buy her house to check up, usually stop twice a week. And she says, 'I have a valentine/ B-day gift for you." And unwrap the gift and it's a Rolex box! She then says 'I knew you would never buy yourself one, so I got one for you.'

And she was right. I would never buy one for myself. So I am pretty overwhelmed right now. I did not see this coming at all.

Every one should have a DJ. It's flagship of Rolex. It can be dressy and also sporty.

I agree, but...

When Rolex decides to bump the case size to 40mm, I'll be the first in line at my AD
