Icon20 Rolex Daytona C

I just don't understand all the hype surrounding the new Daytona C. OK it's a nice watch but paying premium cost for them I think their overrated & to go on a waiting list for up to two year's it's madness. Rolex are releasing them slowly to create this demand. I myself have a TT Daytona White Dial 116503 & I wouldn't exchange it for the Daytona C. Does anyone agree with me or are you all hypnotized by it

There were 2 white dial Daytona C listed recently for $24,500 on the T.O, Canada WatchFinder website. I owner (Sean) informed me that they were sold for $26,000. The MSRP for this watch in Canada is $14,250. Imagine that eh.

Yes it's crazy their selling for between 15,000 & 15,500 sterling in the UK & the price of them in Dublin Ireland In the only Rolex AD in the City is 11,600 Euro which is
considerably cheaper than the UK. But that's exactly what Rolex set out to do releasing them very slowly it's all about supply & demand

I'm on the list and will purchase at msrp when I'm called. I like the piece but not willing to pay over msrp. Heck by the time the call comes, I may no longer be interested.

My AD mentioned to me Monday he has 33 on the list for ceramic Daytonas. That is nuts!

While technically Padi is correct, the physical characteristics of the Daytona have changed drastically, it looks like a very different watch now.

Of primary note is that the black bezel on the black Daytona C pulls the dial of the watch forward and through the bezel, it changes the whole dynamic, feels just like what we love about the Submariner- a huge disc of black exploding atop a steel bracelet. In the top photo comparing the 500 to the 520 it's very easy to see, the black dial that was pulled inwards and made to look small in a sea of stainless is now blooming outwards and dominating the design.

And this is also why there has been a shift from the "oh it looks like a panda" white dial to the "wow it looks like a Submariner" black dial in recent months. The white Daytona C misses out on the black's dominance over the steel because the dial is a different color, it doesn't blend with the bezel, so the white dial doesn't get pulled outwards to explode over the bracelet like the black Daytona C does. See lower photo.

There's a good Datejust analogy here too, the way that the dial on the DJ is made to look small because of the sea of stainless about the bezel, that's what the old Daytona 520 feels like compared to the new ceramic in both iterations. It's no longer about the bracelet and the case with the dial an afterthought. The dial is paramount now, at least for the black Daytona C.

Point being, the bezel matters a lot, it's not an insignificant change to be disregarded so flippantly as he's done the past year.

The TT white dial is one of the best TT IMO. So long as you like your Daytona, I guess you're set.

I think some people (especially those that wear their Daytona daily), appreciate the ceramic bezel's scratch proof nature and/or use the scale on their bezel (better legibility). For those that don't mind potential scratches on the bezel, the 116520 is great alternative. I actually find scratches to be tougher to acquire than you may think though on the 116520. The 116500 is great for what it is, but the aftermarket prices are a bit out of whack, even for a SS Daytona

I am lucky that I am not a fan of the Daytona, so to some extent I agree with you. If I was a fan, I would guess that I would have bit the bullet and paid over retail to get one.

I like the way they look, just do not like to wear them.

I think the white dial 116520 and black dial 116500 have this somewhat in common. The dial/bezel visually blending together that is

I have yet to see the 116500 in person, but from pics, I think the ceramic bezel suits the black dial better, while the steel bezel (116520) suits the white dial better.

I still adore my white 116520....am certainly curious to compare the new models though.

I tend to agree with you. I originally was lusting over the white like everyone else, but once I saw a few owner shots of the black it was all over.

It's a nice watch for sure but IMHO it doesn't warrant a premium or long waiting lists.

Then again, I'm probably in the minority here!
