New vs. Old: Decisions

Hi All,

Been chatting with some of my watch buddies, and I've reached a bit of a crossroads. In the last month of ownership, I've loved having my Tudor Sub. It's a great watch with an awesome vintage feel to it. That being said, I have also fallen hard for the current ceramic Subs. I'm a bit concerned currently with the decreasing supply that (1) they're much harder to get now and (2) something will change at Basel and make prices go even crazier than they have already. Not to say I can't afford my watches, but my current budget dictates that I stop at 2 high-end pieces. I refuse to part with my Explorer, so I most likely wouldn't be able to add another piece for a few years at least (grad school, bills, etc.)

Would you:

A. Hang onto the Tudor and just wait.

B. Sell the Tudor and put the money towards a SubC ND.

C. Any other realistic ideas

Add the Subc, but keep the Tudor. Wait a few months and see if the Tudor gets any wrist time. If not, flip it and move on!

Sorry, should've mentioned. I always forget since it's in my sig, but I already have an Explorer that I refuse to part with. The Tudor is my second watch.

Normally I would, but budget wise I don't have $6-7k to lay out clean on a 3rd watch. The Tudor would have to be sold to fund the new purchase.

I did something similar. I sold a vintage Tudor Sub 94010 to fund a new ceramic 114060. But maybe the Tudor spoiled me, because I could never get used to the shape and weight of the 114060. So then I sold the ceramic Sub and now I wear a Tudor Sub 79190.

If you like the feel of the 114060, I'd say that now is a good time to go for it--it's been nice to see the 79190 go up in value and become more rare, but I'm sure the 114060 will get more expensive at a faster rate. But if you stick with the 79190, I have to say it's fun wearing something that you never see on others and that has the date!

Gotcha. I guess I would just hold tight then. I think you'll miss the Tudor when it's gone, and you may not be able to re-acquire in the condition you presently own.

You can always get a modern sub down the road, when you've saved up a bit more.

Interesting to hear from someone who's had both. I suppose they both have their merits in some way. I do like the vintage feel and rarity of the 79190, but I also very much like the heft and feel of the bigger, bolder Sub. You definitely have me thinking hard about hanging onto the Tudor though.

That's more than fair. Condition and rarity is the main issue here. I could replace it I'm sure, but at what cost? Mine was a very reasonable number, which is part of why I scooped it up.

I can definitely get a modern Sub easily down the road, but at what cost? I'd hate to see them go the way of the SD4k and be around $10k.

The Tudor is long out of production and will only appreciate over time.

These are going up up up and away in value.

ND ceramic subs aren't hard to find. Let that be your guide.

Keep what you have. The Tudor is lovely, and I think you would regret letting it go. Save for the sub and add I reckon. Once you have it, then it will be easier to make a decision on whether to sell the Tudor or not.....

I think for now I've been convinced to keep the Tudor. As much as I like owning different pieces, I suspect I'd eventually regret selling the Tudor as well.

It'd be harder to get back to the Tudor later I think...I struggle now to go back to pre ceramic SS Rolex and the prices are out of control and I can't justify it. Regret letting go of what I've had before, would cost me twice or more of what I paid before re-acquiring them.

You'd probably have to go back to a 1680 for me to trade that Tudor for a Rolex Sub. Keep that thing. You can't beat its low profile bezel, printed dial and overall coolness.

Definitely interesting to see the split on this.

I still would like a SubC, but the Tudor is particularly special in its limited run (1995-1998 only, and even then it was only a matte dial for a part of that period).

Ultimately, I think if they make changes at Basel my opinions on what I do could change. I was shocked to see Kirill sold the 79190 he got in for $4500 in less than a day. The value on these have really gone bonkers. I even know that the gent who sold me mine had no less than 6 different offers overnight. He accepted mine on the basis that I contacted him first (15 mins after it was listed, by chance, at 1am).

I have learned over the years to keep every watch if you can but I cannot see the 79190 reaching snowflake prices anytime soon, I was lucky enough to grab a new sub date in December and it’s a perfect watch, go for the new sub ND.

The 79190 isn't hugely collectable right now. Older Tudor subs are going crazy right now but I would bet the later models like yours will go up eventually too. Although, if you have the first run matte dial version you have a somewhat scarce model. Kind of like the early 16800's matte dial vs the later WG surround dials. Being a sapphire crystal I would source the Rolex sub that you want...then flip the Tudor if you felt like it.

Altho the 79190 may not be "hugely collectable right now" .. I was floating around the web for a 'Birth Year' piece..and came upon some Tudor Sub's ie 79190's like mine...and they seem to fetching in the vicinity of $6-9K CAD.

I think it's funny this thread got revived.

Just so you're all aware, the Tudor got sold a few months back to another gent on the forums. I've considered a few other watches since then, but I purchased an Explorer II Polar over the weekend and couldn't be happier.
