The Patek Nautilus 5990 checks a lot of boxes. If I had to pick only one for life it might be that one. The Rolex GMT Master II is tempting too. Its bullet proof and the multiple time zone complication is a useful feature. Tough call.

But... that's a tough one. Assuming I'm selling all of 'em because I desperately need the cash for something else? I'd sell all of 'em. If things were that dire that I needed the cash, I just can't see holding on to my no-date Sub as the cash I'd get for that would help me get out from under whatever house fell on me.

I mean, let's face it, a watch is a watch. I could make do with a Timex if all I wanted to do is tell time. In fact, I have a couple of watches that that I wear out in the woods when I worry about smacking into something. And you can't beat a quartz watch for keeping time - especially one that costs twenty bucks.

This thread could spawn (another) fascinating thread on cost, disposable income, and more. I grew up solid blue collar and never in a million years would I consider that I'd enjoy the quality of life that I'm enjoying right now. I easily have at least $50k tied up in watches. And that's back of napkin math, I could see it being closer to $75k if I did the math or looked at the prices I paid. Rolex, Omega, and a few others. And, Good Lord, if I did the math on other stuff that I didn't need but have collected over the years? It'd be a lot.

I've got a pretty decent collection as you'll see in my signature line - but, Holy Cow, some of the guys that post here with 15 or 20 incredible watches? Or more. That. Blows. My. Mind. Good for them. But it still blows my mind. The thing that I struggle with is what am I gonna do with all my stuff as I get older? I'm 53 and while I plan on being around for a while, I'm gonna keel over one day. Then what? Leave it all to my kids? Sure, but they're different people and have different interests. I don't see them holding onto my collection(s) because it was important to me. It'd be different if I gifted a single Rolex that I wore every day of my life to my son. He'd probably treasure that single watch as a reminder of his old man. But to give him seven Rolex watches? I could easily see him saying, "hmm, let's turn these into cash". So, should I do that before I fall over?

I'm a big gun guy and what's really common in the gun biz is that a widow finds some shady guy who says, "Yeah, I'll give you $10000 for everything", and, boom! There goes a $100,000 collection. Lesson learned? Plan ahead and make sure your spouse knows the value of what you've got and how to dispose of the items.

Sorry for the thread hijack - just thinking through what comes after the collection...
It is an interesting thought for sure. Makes you wonder if sometimes less really is more... I think there really is a lot of benefits (many of them mental) to downsizing all the 'stuff' in your life. Its a very liberating feeling.

Right now, 116619 or SD4k. Ask me again tomorrow and the answer might be different.
It is a tough one, but I think of those two the SD4K is the winner!

Hypothetically of course... Sounds like the DD40 is the way to go!

An amazing watch made even more amazing by the fact that the love of your life bought it for you on your birthday. I would engrave it and wear it for her everyday.

Another for the 16710 here also. I have all three bezel inserts and both jubilee and oyster bracelets: so if I had to cut it down to just one, my one could be worn 6 different ways!

Fun to think about...

And interestingly, this little thought experiment has me excited for a GMT Master II Pepsi... which Isn't a watch that I yet own. I'd probably go for a 5 digit, because I just love the size of those cases, but the GMT function, plus a date, plus the pop of color from the bezel seems like a watch that could keep me happy forever.

Geez... Making me wonder why I have all these others now, and no GMT Master... Uh oh.

Excellent question. Very tough answer. For me, it would be my Daytona C white.

If it was a watch I did not own, probably the platinum Daytona.

The Daytona is the most comfortable watch I have ever worn.

Explorer for sentimental reasons, 1st one that was my Dad’s, rotated between my brother and myself.
That was a true tool watch 24/7 365 days a year.

Of the three watches that I have, this is really tough. All three were gifts from my wife on different occasions.

I think I would pick my SD43.

If it has to be a watch that i own, then my Yacht-Master blue dial.

Otherwise it would be the white gold Sub with sunburst blue dial, white font and 3235 caliber that i dream about...

If it could be *any* watch - it would be a pp 5711.

Undortunately as I don't own one (yet...), I'll pick my 116719 BLRO. It's PM and "expensive" so the value and "preciousness" is there in how it feels on the wrist (dat heft); but to the average passerby it looks like a toy/midtier sport watch due to the cartoony red/blue, imo.

Awesome watch, not a bit too bulky for a one watch for life?
