Icon20 Rolex Purchase Advice Long Term

Looking for some serious advice on a potential purchase between a Rolex Yachtmaster, gold with black rubber encased band and a Submariner, gold with blue face. Investment? Every day wearer?

Every day wear it's all up to you. As an investment I think that the Sub might be easier to sell.

The submariner would be the better of the 2, but you will definitely lose money on it.

Gold watches aren't investments, and they're bad speculations as well.

For daily wear: get the one you like more.

I'd rather have and wear the sub...but for an investment, stick to stocks and bonds.

There is your answer... more people want them = easier to sell.
I personally wouldn't be buying a precious metal Rolex unless I planned to keep it forever, if you buy used its not such a bad idea as someone else will have taken the hit on it.

I’m new to luxury watches so just trying to understand but.....doesn’t this apply to all watches and not just the precious metals? Is the initial hit bigger for the PM?

Neither are a good investment, but the Sub is a great looking watch!

How does one size that rubber bracelet? Would that be a possible problem if you ever planned to sell the YM?

You'll take a pretty big hit on any PM piece if you buy brand new. Some a little more and some a little less.

I am not an expert by any means but the loss on precious metal watches tends to be far greater.

I assume it has something to do with the smaller target market and the fact that if you are able to part with 30-40k on a watch, money is not a huge factor so more precious metal watch buyers just buy new (especially as discounts can be had at AD's and it opens up opportunities to get on the list for desirable SS pieces like the Ceramic Daytona).
Whilst a SS Rolex is not what you would call cheap it is more affordable, meaning more buyers and no big discounts. That's my theory anyway.

Yeah, get the sub-c for daily wearer, or explorer ii polar would be another alternative for a descrete look since so many sub-c out there. Sub-C date, however, will retain better value over time, mostly after 10 years.

You should get the one you really want and just enjoy. Luxury is meant to be enjoyed anyway, good luck :)

PS: I’m a polar expl ii p series my self + a speedy hesalite + seiko 6139 the pogue, love them dearly :)

Thanks very much everyone for your awesome advice, greatly appreciated.
Daily wearer is the Sky Dweller in SS and black face with two Panerai's 275 and 359 in the drawer and almost time to part with them.
Just love the look and feel of the Gold Sub and blue face, preowned but unworn and will decide shortly. The Yachtmaster may have to wait on the great advice i have received especially not being able to size the bracelet and finding someone my size, good luck.

Not an investment.

Do you want to wear it every day?

Not sure how to help.

Sounds like a plan. Don't get me wrong, I love the YM (former owner here), but sizing is critical to the piece. Unless you know what size strap(s) you need and have a way of sourcing it, I would advise against it, frankly. Especially since it doesn't come with the easy link like the new Daytona's.

And the sub is...awesome.

You don’t have to find someone with the same size wrist for the YM on Oysterflex. Once you own the watch you can take it into an AD and they will use Rolex’s sizing tool to determine what size oysterflex segments you need and you’ll be able to purchase them. I’m not sure of the price offhand.
