AP vs. Daytona

Hello TRF. Am for a lookout for a watch. I made my mind for the ceramic Daytona white dial but still sometimes wonder about the AP. Yesterday, I saw the AP 37mm with blue dial and for the first time, it fits my wrist wonderfully since I got tiny wrists. Question is, why the $20,000 for that and at least $5000 less for the superb Daytona?

if you have to ask i would argue you dont "get it". You cant compare AP/PP/ALS or similar brands to Rolex. Its not the same thing. You need to decide what kind of watch you want first. They are not substitute watches. My gut tells me you are better off with the daytona. Its a great choice anyway.

While the 37mm AP looks very nice and if it fits you, that is good. However, its size/thickness ratio makes it one of the least elegant RO's so its not my favorite. 15202 is the choice for a smaller AP.

To answer OP's question, the holy trinity manufacturers spend 50-60% of their total production time on finishing, most predominantly, hand-finishing. This adds to the cost of their watches.

The white Daytona is stunning and you will be saving yourself $5k.

(But isn't 37mm a wee bit too small? I don't know about your wrist circumference; but, I'd choose 41mm or at least 39mm.)

To me it depends on many factors. First is this your only watch? If so I would get the Daytona, more versatile, more durable and less service cost. Thats purely for pragmatic reasons.

Now The AP Royal oak, gorgeous as it is, is a delicate piece. Easily scratched, and despite its water resistance, I would never wear it to the pool. It looks great under the cuff of a shirt and casual wear, but its a super bling watch, which may bring unwanted attention.

So if this is your second or third watch go with the AP, if this is your one and only, you can't beat the versatility of the Daytona. Not to mention if the price is right the Daytona keeps better value.

Seem like pretty different choices for me. Similarity being both SS and hard to get via official routes. To then ask why there is a price differential seems odd.

Close your eyes and picture yourself in you most common habitat. Which watch are you wearing?

That 37mm is quite thick for its diameter imho..better to get the daytona - more scratch and shock resistant, waterproof, and you will have less troubles having it serviced than the AP 15450. I would however add a 15202 with that daytona ;)

I love that AP RO Openworked. It's one of my grail watches. I'll get one in SS.

I think Patek should counter AP with a Nautilus Openworked. Their current skeletonized watch is for the Calatrava line, which doesn't look good to me.

I have both — Daytona and 15202. I wear the Daytona often. AP is reserved for some important occasions or if I want some attention. It is for me a statement watch.

Between your 2 choices I’d go with the Daytona.

I prefer the Daytona, but the AP is awesome. You def have a well rounded enough rotation of watches to Justify the AP. If it were a one and only
I’d say for sure get the Daytona. But since you already have several other Rolex, the AP would fit in well.

It really depends on your personality and what you do with your watches.

For me, despite me having a decent sized, and versatile collection that’d be inviting to add that AP, I know it simply wouldn’t get wrist time, except for when I’m dressed up for special occcasions. That’s just my personality.

I would go Daytona over 15450- as others have mentioned, The proportions of the 15450 are just off IMO. Daytona will wear the same, size size and may even feel a bit smaller on the wrist
