Zaratsu Polishing

Thinking of GS as my next purchase. How susceptible to scratches are the Zaratsu polished cases? I've heard they scratch almost immediately.

In my experience no worse than a Rolex. I mean a scratch is a scratch and doesn’t look good but I’ve managed to avoid getting any on my SBGW231 apart from maybe some micro scratches that are not visible when looking at a normal distance. And that is a very shiny case.

I actually just bought a pre owned GSX063 from 2012 and I would say it looks comparable to my similar age Rolex Explorer I bought new in 2013. Obviously not brand new and has been worn but still look great. Neither have been polished.

So in short I would say don’t let the fear of scratches put you off but at the same time treat your watches with the care they deserve and they will look just fine.

I have a Casio Zaratsu polished titanium case watch. I have worn it, but I have not seen any scratches on it at all.

Mine has been through daily wear. It scratches as much as any other watch. It’s just that it is more visible when it happens. Mine is daily well scuffed now

All polished surfaces scratch. Called patina

I've never noticed my GS surfaces scratching easily (new or vintage), but they will show scratches of course (though not as readily as Rolex 904L in my experience).

Bear in mind that 'Zaratsu' is just the Japanese pronunciation/spelling for Sallaz, which was the German company that made Seiko's polishing machines from the 1950s. It's not based on some mysterious Okinawan sword-polishing ritual :)

Didn’t know this, thanks. Does this mean I can no longer identify as a Samurai when I wear my GS?

I've been wearing SBGE275 daily including nights and just looked. The sides are completely fine. Only my bracelet has some obvious desk diving wear.

I'd concur so far, I have the SBGJ255 (titanium GS Hi-Beat 36000 GMT) and it hasn't scratched yet 🙏

I am generally very careful and obsessive with scratches, and even more so with the GS - But I will say, that my one friend wears the hell out of his GS 44GS case, and it is scratched up like crazy!.. but still looks amazing!!
sitting across the table at dinner, going for dinks etc, seeing it on his wrist from a social distance, it sparkles and shines the way you'd expect fresh from the factory... upon close inspection, it makes baby Jesus cry, but from a real life perspective - scratches really don't seem to matter.

(I realize that "real-life" and the world of the watch collector are very detached from each other, but I thought I'd offer this observation)..
