5711a > 5980a > 5712a At Sotheby's Auction Today

Interesting results....

Buyer's premium is there..so the 5711 sold for $65k...

Did I read that correctly? The 5980 sold for less than the 5711? That makes no sense to me

Does a buyer pay sales tax on top of the final price including commission or no? That 5711p looked like a bargain price. Hopefully comes down even more to make it obtainable

It’s harder to get higher demand.

Lot 1028, a 2007 year 5712 sold for $81,250 USD; and Lot 955, a 2017 year 5712 sold for $68,750 USD... they both seem to be in similar condition with papers. Why such a huge discrepancy?

5712 selling less than 5711 is a surprise.

I went to the Sotheby's viewing and sale. With the exception of lot 955, all the SS Nautili were crisp, unpolished full sets with either COO or an extract. And, because these watches are basically a fungible commodity, they all sell within the same price ranges you'd find here on TRF or slightly below what you'll find on Chrono24. At Sotheby's, unless you're a dealer, you have to pay NY sales tax, figure an additional 9%. I was interested in lot 819, a 5980/1a white dial. Sold for $60K hammer, $75K with tip (buyers premium), $82 with taxes. Check out the prices offered here on TRF for a similar piece. The same. Water seeks it's own level and water is a fungible commodity just like a Patek Nautilus.
Sometimes lots at auction will go much higher than seems reasonable, but seldom below, unless you're interested in "not hot" watches like Sotheby's lot 953 the YG 5107 on bracelet.

Honestly, I've never looked at modern watches at auctions like this to be representative of the true market.

Most 5711, 5712, etc., buyers don't participate in these auctions.

The best heartbeat check is the grey market. Sadly it's opaque to us in terms of sale results.

This watch looks very attractive for the money and 25 times less expensive than the 5711: https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auct...tion-c-a-white

No it does not...but the 5711 represents the best of genta and Patek. That omega is nice

Without the 5711 and that lineage... Patek would essentially be lange and vacheron

:) lol
