Sadly I suspect someone he knows had a role in this. A random, chance encounter is certainly possible but the report stated that only the watch was taken.

it's in the UK so it is quite likely the gun was a replica anyway

would have been funny to see the thieves faces if the watch turned out to be too

No, not at all, it's an OK area, not great but not ridden with gangs or crime by any means.

I would initially feel that this robbery is targeted and possibly bad on bad though.

IIRC that's to some extent a student area, which might explain the age of the victim and the watch. But I would agree that when there are these high value claims they do often turn out to back up with evidence.
