Just did a return on Amazon.com......

I bought an item for my bike but it doesn't fit so I went on Amazon.com to do a return. The process was easy enough (might worth mentioning I have a Prime membership), at the end of the return process, this popped up...

I guess the cost of shipping the item back to them isn't worth it so that's why I get to keep it. I went online to do some research and found that there were quite a few people reported the same thing (some item as high as $25!).

I know that 10 bucks isn't going to kill Amazon but I'm used to the old days when you have to return the item to get your money back.

Thoughts?

Wow, never heard of that before. Like you said, I'd guess it doesn't pay them to get it back, then have to go through the trouble with the manufacturer.

For $10 I wouldn't waste my time even trying to return it.

Now if 100,000 customers ask for a return . . . quite a ticket . . .

Had that happen once to me. Don't remember what, but I seem to remember it was a pretty low ticket item that was being returned as defective. Surprised me too, though I do order quite a bit of stuff from Amazon, with very little returns.

I am ordering construction materials all the time. Heating cables for bathroom floors, sinks, toilets, cabinets, tile, hardwood flooring, and shower doors/interior doors. I would say on average every 4th return the seller says don't bother sending it back. It's not cheap stuff either. If something is broken I rarely get asked to send the item back. Granted some of this stuff is crated or very large, but I guess the write off is easier than the logistics.

Sweet! I just returned something I bought for 5.95. Prime has free shipping and free returns. I had to send it back so they spent more on shipping than the thing is worth

I guess free stuff is free stuff. I'm not complaining. I read one guy bought a 7 bucks cable from them and when he tried to return it, Amazon told him to cut it in half, take a picture and email it to them.

That's what makes "Amazon-easy" a catch phrase for e-commerce wanna be's...

That exact same thing happened to me about a month ago. I had ordered a watch case holder which turned out to be too small. When I went through the return screens I got the same message. The original cost to me was about $12.

We bought an extended warranty for our fridge through Sears. When we got it, it was over half off already since it was the year priors model. We scratched it fairly bad during delivery and turned it in under warranty. They didn't have any new stainless panels for it, so they gave us an I store credit towards a new fridge and said they would pick up ours when we got a new fridge. We got it for around a grand and it retailed for $2,400 at the time so we just got a flat screen and some other stuff with the gift card pretty much free. And all of those were on clearance too

There is a reason the stock price is $700 a share :-)

I buy everything I can from them--can't live without Prime.

That's great... are you still planning on returning the item anyway?

I love Amazon and buy almost everything online from them, except on some electronics that I buy at Best Buy since I'm trying to keep my "Platinum Elite" Status for a few more years.

another amazon.com feature...during the checkout procedure, if you apply & qualify for their 'rewards' Chase/Visa card, they add a $50.00 gift certificate to your account & so anything you order is $50.00 off or free (depending upon the item cost).

This happens to us a lot. I bought a cook book for my wife for Christmas off of Prime Now and it happened to be. A book she already had. She processed the return and got the same message. It was a $30 book.

Crazy.

Have had it happen with less expensive items as well. Just feels odd to keep something you did not pay for. We donated the book to the library and donate all the other stuff as well.

Cool! Been an Amazon customer since April, 1999. Started out by buying books and CD's.

A few years later, starting buying other things. Always been happy and their return policy is excellent!

I returned a kindle fire and Amazon didn't want it back. I returned some socks - same thing. I did read about a guy who returned something like 36 items over the course of his prime membership and they closed his account.
