National Peace Officer Memorial Day

National Peace Officer Memorial Day is tomorrow, May 15th. To all my brother and sister officers still on the job, retired or walking the beat in the blue yonder... be safe, watch your six and remember you are never alone. Even the old road dogs such as myself will always come running toward the gunfire to aid and assist you in your time of need...

"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

We'll have the flag at half-mast tomorrow at our offices in their honor.

Brave men and women.

Archangel Michael. The patron saint and protector of police officers. I wear his medallion and thank him daily.

Great poem/story Sarge. Amazing summation of the life of a police officer.

Thank you so much.

You're welcome Tom. I always wore two St. Michael medals, one pinned on my ballistic vest and a second on a neck chain, both engraved with my initials and training number. I still wear the neck chain one, old habits die hard. Be well brother.

My wife is a Trooper...was just a memorial for 2 fallen AK State Troopers that were shot recently. It is the most thankless job, with the most importance. Too everyone out there, thank you, and be safe!

Thanks to all who serve in public safety.

St. Michael the Archangel is an apt patron saint for our guardians. After all he was the original first responder when Lucifer deigned to go wrong

Thank you all for the heartfelt responses. Today is always a bit emotional for me, not quite as much as 911 but still a somber day. I put on my class A uniform far too many times for funerals and still have it hanging in the attic for those fateful days.

Thanks for your service. A tough job and at times thankless for sure. My father had 35 years in as a police officer and I have the utmost respect for those in your profession.

Tim: great post. Thanks.

my dad, who is now gone 29 years, always told me two things about LEO:

1. It's a thankless and dangerous job(hopefully the thankless part has been corrected at least a little bit over the years) , and

2. The police are the only force standing between us(civilians, the public) and criminals......

It's true.

My best!

I went to Police Memorial Week in 2002, obviously just after the many losses in 9/11, we sent about 30 Metropolitan Police officers from the UK and it was an incredible trip.

I was flipping channels one night and I came across COP’s. I would have continued flipping, but, they were doing a parody with the X Files. I had to watch agents Scully and Mulder.

They were chasing one of their creatures and were riding along with a Deputy Sheriff. The Deputy explained his philosophy on how a shift went.

It has always stuck with me and I believe it is in the back of every LEO’s mind when they go to a 911 hang-up, a car stop, a robbery in progress, or any other dangerous call. A haunting thought.

From the best of my memory, “Somewhere, someplace, sometime, there is someone out there that wants to kill me. The only question is, do I meet him tonight?”

Excellent post Larry, akin to the old academy saying that goes somewhat to the effect of, somewhere out there someone is training and practicing, if you're not and someday the two of you meet... you'll loose. That always stuck with me. I forgot all about the 1* though!
Be safe bro

Dan,
Yes, it's not as thankless as it once was but your second statement is still more true than ever before!

Hang in there, it'll go quick! I love being retired, I hit the floor running pretty much every day and sleep better than I ever did when I was working. Life is good for me!

That is Awesome! I started as a city cop in 1985 when I was 23. This after four years in the Military Police. You will love retirement.

Saw some friends die and many strangers I had never met. I was the last person a few of them saw at shootings or car accidents. Drained me.

You have earned your retirement. Live long and enjoy it.

A bittersweet day here in AZ where we had to bury an officer who was killed by a wrong way drunk SOB earlier this week. Congrats to those of you who have made it to retirement. To those still on the job, watch your six and wear your vest.
