PP 5970J vs Rolex 16660 Matt COMEX

I posted this question on the Rolex vintage board as well. I have the opportunity to trade my 5970J for a Matt 16660 COMEX. Both watches are grails to me for different reasons. The COMEX is a super rare "issued" watch with a unique dial. The 5970 is IMHO one of the best PP's ever made. I wish i could have both but current conditions do not allow for that at the moment so I really have to choose.
One is a watch you can wear often and only a select few would even know why its special and the other is one that you just don't wear eery often but typifies watchmaking at its finest. I appreciate the input and thanks much.

I just can't put a PCC, and the industry's best imho, equal to a Rolex Diver, no matter how rare it is. Ultimately I value the watch itself over the aura or resale or rarity.

Down the road, which would you regret not having more the Patek 5970J or the Rolex 16660 COMEX? To me, any 5970 is extremely special for what it is, not what it represents. I would keep that beauty and wear it more. When I wear my 5970R, no one has ever asked me about it, and seeing it on my wrist still bring a smile every time.

I wouldn’t do that for a 5 Digit Comex. I wouldn’t do it for a 5514 or 1665 ether. I owned both a 5970R and fully documented Comex 5514 and I can promise you the 5970 was far more special than a watch with a logo on dial and some dive history.

100% with you on this one , you have to be a vintage guy to prefer the alternative

One is an amazing and unique diving watch, the other will tell time in perpetuity. Personally I hope to live to perpetuity and don't dive. Easy call for me

Arguably the greatest perpetual calendar chronograph ever made from the most prestigious watch company for a watch made in the millions with a logo on the dial? The vintage Rolex market confuses the hell out of me, they made millions and millions of these watches, they aren’t rare. I believe it’s a huge bubble.

Taking rarity out of the equation, the modern day comparison is a rolex 116610 or patek 5270. No comparison imo, ymmv.

No trade. Now if you asked whether I would trade your 5970 for a 4 digit comex or even a Mk1 6263 then I'd be saying yes.

Excellent thoughts. You can't argue with experience and knowledge.

Really depends on which is your grail for the stronger reason. Horology, the 5970 hands down.

Keep the PP

As an aside , I am not sure if I would trade it for a PN either ( I know this is not he trade that has been requested but.....)

Now I don't own either but that is my gut feeling.

I may get shredded on the forum for saying this

Julian

That said, my understanding is that the the watches were primarily issued to people who worked in the office and not the divers themselves?

Hopefully someone can clarify.

Had the OP been eyeying a documented mil sub, I would be changing my tone.

Even though I don't like PCCs, it's hard to recommend rare vintage Rolex unless it's purely an investment, or you genuinely love them. I don't think vintage Rolex is a bubble, it may be nuts in some people's view, but they just keep going up, and I think they always will.

In the Comex days, office workers didn't buy professional models, they bought DJs. This is one reason vintage divers are rare, whilst you can get a DJ from the same era and with the same movement for peanuts. It's only comparatively recently that there's been a fashion for people who are not divers buying Subs, and this has helped to propel the market for DRSDs, red subs, 5513s, etc.

I'm starting to think the same way on popular current models too. Limited supply withstanding, there also seems to be a very healthy demand for these, as much as a commodity now; maybe due to continually low interest rates and a rising stock market that encourages people to spend/invest elsewhere on relatively low risk and tangible rates of return.

Keep the Patek. Knowing that you have time, calendar and chronograph on your wrist made by the craftspersons at Patek will give you more pleasure over the long haul.

A bit of apples to Orange County tho. Vintage freaks would go the other way.
