Sydney SS Sky Dweller report

I received an email from one of the local AD’s last night saying the Sky Dwellers had arrived. Wahoo! So this morning I decided to check it out. I visited 3 AD’s in the Sydney CBD. One had received a single TT and sold it immediately (pre-allocated). Another had received 3 and similarly all sold. The third dealer had not received any.

None could say when their next allocation would come or how many it would be.

Feeling a little sad, as it is my #1 most desired model.

I will try my luck in Hawaii in Oct. I have low (realistic) expectations.

Maybe letting them know asap when you receive notification that you will buy one would have one the day. Hard to say for certain. Keep up the search!!! And keep the faith!!!

Yep, 3rd was Swiss Concept. 1 and 2 were Rolex Boutique and Hour Glass respectively.

I knew it, they tend to be a bit slow when it comes to new released but great service however

I've been there done that numerous times, the AD's have their favourite customers or buddies, and I get that.

It is disheartening, but there are other options.

Trusted sellers here for example

I'm going to Sydney tomorrow....so I'll know what to expect....not

I have made one enquiry with one of the trusted sellers, but the premium over rrp was too much for me to swallow.

You can't even walk in and buy a Sub at any Sydney AD, and you're expecting SS Skydweller?

Are you on any of their lists?

I had a similar experience here (Hong Kong). I got a message from my AD with a photo of a a SS skydweller...blue dial.

I was slightly disappointed, as I'm on a watch buying break for a couple of months, but no sooner had I decided to get off the wagon (took about 3 minutes), he dropped me a note saying that the watch was reserved for a VVVIP, but would let me know when more arrived.

Oh well! On the wagon, i stay

AFAIK, they haven’t even arrived in Singapore yet. Well, my AD hasn’t had one yet anyway.

Must admit, I’m getting a little irritated with Rolex releasing these new models and you can’t get them for love nor (sensible) money.

It does stink. Perhaps by next basel it will be easier to obtain.

Was lucky enough to get a DSSD Blue from JFP after a year, without a deposit, but they are now asking for $1,000

Aussie prices are great plus you get GST back if travelling and JFP will hold the watch for you

Good luck in your search

Well, I called JPF today and they were really straight forward and lovely to talk to.
They get 1 Sky Dweller per month from Rolex and their list is 30 long!

One thing I did not say originally, but at one of the dealers, I was told that they look after existing customers first, and I thought to myself, how in the hell would I ever become an existing customer with that approach? I am certainly not going buy (and flip) a bunch of Datejust's just to become an existing customer, so I guess I will never become a customer and will spend my $20K somewhere else. Feeling really happy I bought my DSSD in Fiji and NOT Australia.

I live in the US and my dad lives in Sydney. I purchased him a new Datejust from an AD in the US as a 70th birthday present last year. We took it to the Rolex store in Martin Place to have the bracelet size adjusted. They were condescending and arrogant. The sales person initially said he would not do the adjustment unless I brought in the warranty card. I have been to many AD's in the US and have never experienced anything like that. I hope it was just an isolated incident but based on that I cannot imagine what one might have to do in Australia to get your hands on a Daytona C or SS Skydweller.

Why would AD bother letting you or anyone know that SS skydwellers are here when they are all presold ?

If you walked in and bought a PM Rolex or a hard to move patek you’ll be surprised at how quick they will offer you the hard to get pieces. I was told if I bought a full gold submariner I could have a SS Daytona within a week..... what a joke! I don’t even bother with Sydney AD’s anymore, straight to David SW for me.

Yeah, grey market gets the job done, but currently at quite a premium. I will revisit that option after the US trip in Oct.

Never buy Rolex's in Sydney. Rip off bigtime and your not meant to claim back the tax if you never intend to take the watch offshore.

TRS are cramping down on this now. A friend of mine got into trouble and had to pay back all the GST plus a fine.

Just buy from a trusted seller on here. You will save more than any AD can offer you and you will have it to your door in 3-4 days.

Would love to do that. In fact I have done that for a THC, but for the SS Sky Dweller, there is a very hefty premium to be paid at this point in time.

I will see how I go in Hawaii and Seattle.

Problem is there is no "grey market" in Australia. And as Good as the some of our friends are here on TRF they are quoting US dollars which equates to around $27k AUD then GST another 10%.. Is waiting a few months to save 10K really that bad?

The best is to always just get on a credible list and sit tight waiting for the call.

Australian retail prices on new watches are more than reasonable, used - not so much

Is there GST payable from an overseas delivery of a Rolex?

How did your friend get busted? Would love to hear the story - where, when, what sort of watch/es?

To be honest I've bought heaps of Rolex's and my friends have too. AU to buy Rolex or any watch for that matter is not worth it.

(i./e) go find a YG Skydweller on Bracelet in AU for $32K USD which at todays exchange rate is about $40k AUD. You wont get it at anywhere near that price at ANY AD and gray market dealers the best they will do is probably around the $44-$45k AUD mark (if your lucky). Rose Gold one around $47-$48k AUD.

Save yourself the money and put it towards another watch - just buy from O/S. Everyone that I personally know now buys from O/S and never local now. Its just not worth it when you buy multiple items the cost savings becomes huge and will add up to another watch very quickly.

As for my friend getting in trouble I dont know the complete story but he was claiming back $4k GST on a DD40 he got for around $42k. I will ask him on the weekend when I see him at a mutual friends BBQ.
