It's ridiculous, when I got my first one new I took it out and thought WTF, a small 50cm3 moped makes more noise!!!! Had put all my saving in the bike and had to drive with it like that for 1 month before I could change them

I love the deep loud sound of a custom exhaust, but I've found them tiring on 5,000-6,000 mile rides, so on my touring bikes, I've always kept the quieter stock exhausts.

That works! Our riding partners communicate with us via radio as we tour. Also have an intercom, so our helmets are wired with speakers and microphones. And yes, I wear a helmet.

I have intercom to pillion for when I have the boss on board but find it difficult to hear when wearing the plugs.
There are some plugs with integrated speakers - must try a pair.

Well my pipes have a valve on the left side of the tank, you can open or close the vents, doesn't make a big difference at low regime, but when you rev it p it's supposed to make less or more, in France if the cops stop you, have a decibel meter and you are above, they give you a huge fine and a few days to change the pipes, if you do it in time the fine goes way down, if you don't the fine is huge, like 2-3k, or they can immobilize it, make you get the guy who is gonna change the pipes and only let you go with the correct pipes, don't remember exactly but it is a huge pain in the arse, I wanted to put turn outs like I had on my revious Harley, the seller told me the risks so I left the Akrapovics, still a nice noise but nothing crazy, with my first Harley when I was in a narrow one way street and put on the gas, all the car alarms were going off, one time a neighbor told me that when I was heating it before a ride, his living room windows on the 5th floor were trembling and at that time I used to go out and come back in the middle of the night every Friday Saturday

I was sooo excited to ride my first Harley (a Fat Boy rental down in San Diego). Then I fired it up the first time. The look I shot the guy who had just handed me the keys said "WTF IS THIS??" He gave me a look back like "I know, I know..."

I have a running theory that HD is in bed with the aftermarket exhaust companies. They have a bigger R&D budget than Rinehart, Vance & Hines and Bassani combined. If they wanted to ship with badass pipes, they could.

They cannot. With various government homologation rules being what they are, manufacturers have to produce a product that is homologated for an entire market. That means that for a 50 state legal motorcycle, it has to comply with the strictest regulations among that market. That's noise restrictions, emissions restrictions, safety restrictions, etc.

Haha. Not just that the but various municipalities' noise ordinances. I don't know how low they have to go but it's pretty low.

Both of my Ducatis came with "off road" exhausts in the boxes that if the owner wanted, they could take the road legal exhausts off and replace with the track exhausts. I know that Harley absolutely could do that but for various reasons they won't. I have been to Harley dealerships where there are absolute piles of brand new exhausts taken off just purchased bikes and piled up in the corner because the owners wanted the real deal systems on before they even took delivery of their bikes.

They know what their customers want but they're happy to let their dealers solve that problem for them.

Hahahaha, know what you mean, I had to ride my first one for more than a month with factory pipes, was young and didn't have the cash to do it on the spot, but had the same look as you when I turned the key...

Clean air and less noise pollution is a good thing. Loud pipes do nothing but annoy the shit out of everyone else who has to listen to it.

Took this one out for a while yesterday. Couple of priming kicks, and started on the first switch kick ! Haven’t had this one on a multi-day trip in a couple of years, think it’s about time.

Completely agree. Loud motorcycles are an infantile indulgence that give motorcyclists a negative image in the minds of most of the public which in turn affects how we are respected.

Things like no designated motorcycle parking, laws like lane splitting (no we aren't going to hash that out here) and other conveniences are dismissed because the public is sick of us.

And this whole outlaw thing is pretty embarrassing.
