1680 Red opinions

I’ve had a couple of TRF brothers help me learn much about vintage and what I should be looking for. Last night one of them sent me a PM telling me to check one out that he came across. Other than it being a newer insert, does anyone see any issues with it? The price is lower than similar models I’ve seen in the past year.

Any feedback will be appreciated.

Hands don't appear to be re-lume...did the seller said anything else about the watch? What's the bracelet number? In my experience, every time that something is selling with a discount, there's a reason behind it

I hate to say it because I really don't think it matters, but do the lugs seem over polished, is it just the lighting?

Thanks for looking.

The TRFer who showed me this said that he thought the lugs appeared a little thin.

The bracelet is 93150. The seller said that the hands and dial are untouched, and it has been polished and that's the main reason for the lower price. The price is $17.5K.

Is the fact that the spring bar is so visible a sign that it's been polished too much? To be honest the polishing aspect doesn't bother me because I plan to wear it all the time.

Skinny lugs and needs a $2k original insert is why it’s selling cheap. The hands and dial are gorgeous....just have to pick what matters most

Thanks for your input. Your assessment is the conclusion that I came to as well. I'm OK with the wrong insert because I can take my time and look for a correct one.

Might be just the lighting in the photos but the lume plot colour looks a bit inconsistent..like yellow/white within some plots. Maybe ask for close ups of those. MkIV is early for a 93150 so it’s probably a replacement. Would have been a 9315. Still a good price though if the dial checks out ok!!

It's a common error to judge that lugs are thin because a spring bar is protruding. It might just have the wrong spring bar in it.

You have to look at the lugs themselves - width, shape, curve, length, tips, lug hole positioning, chamfers - and compare with other examples based on photos or experience.

This one's been polished, but that's perfectly normal for a watch from the early 1970s.

I agree with you about the spring bars not necessarily meaning anything, but these lugs DO look pretty thin otherwise...

indeed, an mkIV should carry a 9315 and not a 93150, which were put on since 1975.

That's right. But the 93150 is a perfectly acceptable, and arguably preferable, replacement.

Thanks everyone for their input. I am OK with the bracelet and insert because this is going to be a daily for me. I will replace the insert if the right one comes along. In the meantime, I'll wear it and enjoy it.

I really enjoy the vintage section. Everyone here is always very helpful.

Total congrats! Enjoy it as a daily; you really don’t get better than a red sub.
