Importance of series or run?

Thinking about picking up a pre-owned Panerai..

Question...

Is it better to get a newer series of a model... or a lower series run.. like out of 2500/3500 or 5000

Or do these things not matter at all on the long run?

Like... a series M 200/2500. Vs series V 3212/5000

I'd personally stick with 2006(ish) = late J and almost all K series, or more modern to get the quick change strap system on the 1950's Luminor case.
My wife's 49 is too early to have that, fortunately she doesn't want the strap changed (much).
My 88 has it and it allows the fun of MANY (too many) straps quickly and no scratching the case/ lugs.

Thanks.. that makes sense! And... I’m not much of a reseller or flipper. I tend to hand on to things.... but wondering if a /3500 is worth more than a /5000 on the long run. I’m guessing not since there are 10’s of thousands of a design once they’re done...

Unless there were changes to the specific model (i.e. dot dial or am/pm dial for the 233), I believe it makes no difference at all.

I tend to agree (but then I’ve got a first year dot dial!!) The 372 also changed from plexi to sapphire recently which has an impact.

They are all XX/YYYY, so, focus more on the condition and if there is something particular that you like about a given series (e.g., 111G).

I care about feature, not series.

Take 510/560 (and their titanium brother) as an example. I forgot which series, but the early series has sandwich dial, later series has printed dial. I would pick the dial of choice, instead of what series it is.

I agree. For example on 233 I prefer am/pm and don't care for the for dial. Equally with 372 I would prefer sapphire. Newer watches, better feature - but not necessarily what a purist might choose.

I recently bought a Panerai (pics incoming thread soon) and I went back to an older release to get Plexi over the new sapphire. Just personal preference I believe

Myself as well like the plexi. Because it’s sexy

My feelings as well. I only care about series if there was a significant cosmetic change to the dial or case. Font, subtle number or index changes mean nothing to me. The changes on the PAM 233 are a great example as I personally prefer the AM/PM indicator. Another example would be the 372 when the crystal was switched from plexi to sapphire as I prefer the plexi.

Do the research on the model you’re looking to buy, some examples that I can think of regarding the difference are these

292J - pig on a dial
24A-C - polished bezel with tritium lume
111E-G - painted dial with graffiti movt, probably the same applies on 112,176 and 177 as well
First year 510,560,562,564 have sandwich dial
23 and 29A have tritium dial and hands, while the B already have mixed superluminova and tritium
Early 577 (first year?) have solid caseback
Early 317 (first year) have black movement
I heard story about 24A with titanium case as Panerai did prototype run but the proto got mixed up with the merchandise for sale
