I used to think that you should only wear a Rolex with whatever bracelet was attached to it at the factory. I gradually became more open minded.
I now wear my dive watches with nylon/velcro straps when I'm in the ocean enjoying swimming, snorkel or scuba. I even use them sometimes for general vacation use. It just works better at times and is more practical and comfortable. Doesn't look that bad neither, but I don't concern myself with appearances only. |

True G10 aka Nato straps are best utilized when around "open waters". Divers or anyone that is around open waters deeper than 50ft know if a spring bar pops (on a standard bracelet) , say-BYE BYE to your watch! With G10 straps there is an extra sense of security for me, wearing any of my dive watches on a G10. Better safe than sorry. Plus they look cool!(IMO)

Very basic question. I'm sorry i'm so ignorant but why are these straps given the name "Nato"? I assume the N refers to nylon but the "ato"?

G10 is short for G1098 the Red Coats form that has to be filled out and given to the supply master in ordered to get it issued to one Brit soldier. Nato/G10 is the same, just nicknames for the military watch strap. |

I swapped the leather band on my cartier ronde solo for a blue and white nylon strap and it looks one million times better. It just depends on the watch and color combo. Some watches work with it, some don't.
If you google patek philippe nato, there's people putting their pateks on nylon.

I am debating getting a few NATO to try and preserve the stainless steel a bit when I am on the beach or holiday etc., how easy is it to flip out the stainless bracelet and replace with a nato on an LV with no lugholes?

Gotta say I'm heading in the op's direction. A bunch of great watches and some of the straps are nice and colourful and sporty and all but really, well... No.

I recently got two perlon straps, a black and a dark blue one. When I put them on my submariner I have to admit the looked quite nice but they also seemed to drop the overall appeal of the watch so I fitted back the ss bracelet. Perhaps I will fit them back in the summer when the bracelet gets unbearable

Some of us buy em to wear and enjoy not to show off. The only folks who usually care also call them "Rolly/Rollies"... The NATO or similar strap helps ensure the watch stays on the strap while doing fun things such as: diving, swimming, off-roading, shooting, going to foreign lands, cooking burgers, mowing the back 40, the gym, etc... To rustle jimmies here is my 16610 with the sides brushed (plus a few other fun things) and on a nato. Those lug hole scream for a good strap! |

Pippin, look at Omega website, which now allows you to choose from a huge selection of NATO straps. That doesn’t mean you have to have it, if you prefer bracelet, so be it. I like to change up my straps on my watches regularly as it freshen their look and keeps me from getting something new. Not all NATO are created equal, there are some horrible ones and some which look really cool. Browse and search images of various watches/strap brands on-line and you may warm up to them.

Didnt like the look of extra material folded back on a NATO, but like the look of an Erika Original strap.
