Sooooo any one admit to paying 2-3 times over RRP

People need to chill out a little here, why can’t we accept that some buy through retail without any premium, some pay a little premium and others pay through the roof (albeit for different reasons). There is a place for everyone at the table

Go back a few years and look at what this PP forum was about. It was about watches. Now it’s money money money. This thread is twelve pages long. Ridiculous.

Patek prices softening. Blame it on a small dip in the Dow or the Brexit scandal.

Real reason in the increase of prices are the Chinese pushing it skywards and the culmination of a cut in supply. Two factors.

why is that ridiculous? it is very interesting for me and apparently others to learn about the economics of the watch market. other than that, how many more pics of 5711, 5712,...... do we still need to see?

What is interesting is as follows:

Precious metal is not so precious in fine watch making. At the highest levels of horology, the cost of the materials are actually relatively immaterial.

Steel, tantalum and exotic materials like Ceramic and forged carbon are actually more expensive all-in to develop, manufacture (due to machinery and tooling) than precious metals- main exception is Platinum which is a PITA to finish.

Thus my hypothesis is the following: Precious metals such as WG, YG, RG are actually in the long run less expensive to produce or the lower cost of tooling and manufacturing outweigh the increased cost per gram.

I’ll use an analogy. If this were a Russian Literature forum and there was a Tolstoy sub forum what would you think if practically every thread turned into a multi page discussion of the book business, how many Tolstoy novels were sold, are the softcover versions a better deal than the hardcover, how hard is it to get a hardcover at a discount, my bookstore charges more than yours but I got a free Tolstoy hat and on and on. You find the watch business interesting and I don’t mind that at all but how many pictures of 5711’s or 5712’s do we need to see? How many pictures of houses in New Jersey or brick wall views in NYC do we need to see? And really it’s not so much the watch business comments but there’s so much irrelevant non watch talk now it’s made this into something it never was before.

Actually, it’s almost like the entire Patek forum has narrowed down to focus on only one watch, the Nautilus (with occasional mention of aquanaut when the nauti-talk boils over).

Maybe the moderators should just rename this the “Nautilus Sub-Forum”?

I find the current nauti obsession rather amazing. I mean, just a few years ago Patek had them sitting in the displays begging for buyers. Now people wet themselves at the mere mention of the word, and throw wads of cash into over-msrp premiums and crappy coerced bundles to get one.

As they say, money changes everything...

Let’s remind ourselves: it’s a nice watch but basically the same watch - it didn’t get any prettier or any uglier over the last few years. It only got a lot hotter...

This. This sub forum and the main Rolex forum unfortunately has been afflicted by this trend. Gets really boring after a while, many seem to be in it now for the $ and not for the watches themselves.

Hmmm, does that mean you’re leaving us all behind here in nauti-land and going over to the “dark side” (RM Forum)? :-)

Tip: try to get your hands on a Seiko Alpinist Blue. It will renew your faith in humanity (it’s that good...ok, almost :-). Cheers.
