Advice on Explorer II

Hi,

Having read #08 of the Rolex Magazine i've fallen in love with the Explorer II (White dial).

Can I get a general opinion on this watch from an investment perspective that would be worn in rotation with 5-6 other pieces?

What's it like to own if you own one?
Do you think that it'll go up in value?
In the UK, are you able to comment on the wait time from your AD

Cheers all

Investment? Keep it long enough and you won't lose money (probably).
I like mine, but you need to try one on, they are a bigger watch. I really like the size of the hands and markers, they are easy to see in limited light situations.
Why are you so worried about value retention? If, as you stated, you love the watch get it, but not as an investment vehicle. If you sold it tomorrow you would lose money, it isn't a BLNR or such.
Got mine on the continent just before the craziness started in 2017 so can't help you there.

Hey @Uhtred59, that's a fair point, but I like to also know that the value holds in a watch which is the fantastic thing about Rolex products isn't it?

I suppose I wanted to get a feeling for why this watch (at least in my area) is getting "harder to find", and perhaps, discontinued.

The ADs in London can get them relatively easy (1-3 months) I’ve been offered a couple this year when I’ve been to chat with my AD

I have to agree there shouldn’t be a mindset that these will go up. Just buy a watch you like. If you want value rentention buy gold.

Don't buy it you're concerned about it appreciating over time.

Now, if you buy right, and you decide to part ways with it down the line, you won't lose much.

But nobody here has that magic crystal ball. Put your investment $$ in something that provides a scheduled dividend.

You're probably right. Might pick up a few Britannia's.

I had a Polar for a while and ended up letting it go. It wasn't comfortable on my wrist no matter how I adjusted it.

Yes, keep it long enough and you'll likely get your money back.
I prefer the 5 digits myself but moved them on before they started to go up appreciably as they were redundant in my collection.

If you look at history, old Explorer II's are right up there with Red Subs and the like.

I agree Larry - that’s why I suggest newbies don’t fiddle around guessing - get a 5 digit Expl. II or (if you can afford it) a 4 digit one from a very trusted source.

I've had my Exp II since new in 2012 and it's still a staple in my collection. Very versatile. Under the radar. Wears well on the wrist.

Don’t pay over MSRP for one, and you should get what you paid for it in 10-15 years, when the MSRP will be double what it is now.

I love mine so it's great to me. I didn't buy it as investment but it did go up in value.

This. Polar 5 digit might be my all time fave. Get it. Love it. The investment value will be there. here’s mine in Jordan last year.

The Rolex Explorer II (white) is one of my favorite watches

I have a 2017 - 216570 and a 2000 - 16570

I really like the watch for the very reason that ... most others do not like it!

Also, I live in an outdoor tropical climate ... so the white dial is a much more casual and visible wear for the day time (although you can wear at night)

So, as far as value or as an investment .... If you hold on to this Rolex long enough, it will hold it's value. Granted ... back in the 1960s -70s ... folks that bought Rolex Subs, GMT, Explorer ... they weren't thinking about the collectibility of a 6542 or a Long E 1675, or a PCG Submariner. Today we are much much more educated ... so the value of these watches are collectors pieces will have to be tempered accordingly. In other words ... don't expect your $8K Explorer today ...to be worth $50K in 30 years.

However, if I was to hedge my bets ... Today ... I'd still buy a Rolex sports models, wear the crap out of it, enjoy it ... and in 40 years, whatever it's worth ... it's worth. I will be happy that I had this iconic and historic timepiece on my wrist.

As reference: I also own my fathers' 1967 GMT Master 1675 ;) ... it has history.

Picked up a new Polar a few months ago and absolutely love it.
Two day wait from an AD.
Investment? I think the new 42mm Polar is a sleeper classic, but I bought it bc I wanted to enjoy it.

The 3187 is the most accurate movement I’ve ever owned averaging -0.15 seconds per day. Watch is a great contrast to wearing black dials (my previous 1995 16710 & current 2007 116710LN) for 24 years and I never see them in the wild like Subs/GMTs

I had one (black dial 6-digit) for a few months and ended up moving it to make room for an upcoming incoming (!). I thought it was a great watch for being active and ‘wearing the crap’ out of it as they say.

However, while I thought the case was a great size, I found the bracelet to be visually awkward. I think the bracelet was too skinny and tapers too much. Being a 42mm, it seems like they used the same bracelet as a 40mm sub/expII/etc. It didn’t affect wearability - I just found it to be awkward and unappealing

I have both the white and black. To be honest. I think they are to big. The 42 is starting to bug me (7+ wrists). I do like them but its always kind of a releave taking it off and switch for a 40mm.

I love my black dial. I have it on right now. It wears beautifully on my 7" wrist, perhaps even a bit better than my sub.

I love the watch, i own two 16570s, one in tritium because the patina craze hit me earlier last year and the superluminova version. Great watch, nigh indestructible, highly versatile watch and doesnt always stand out as a rolex.

Man, i owned one and wanted to like it, but I had a couple quality issues with it... Specifically, the GMT hand would not line-up on the hour marker once the minute hand hit 12. I feel like the hands shouldn't be out of alignment on an $8k watch... This was a problem on a number of Polars at that time (about 3-4 years ago); not sure if the issue has been corrected?

Another issue I had was with the crown. I've owned a number of Rolex watches, but the Exp. 2 was the only piece where the crown felt extremely "tinny" and cheap... And winding it reminded me of a wind-up toy--very clicky and LOUD... Lastly, every time I went to hack the movement, the hands would jump! Should there really be that much slack???

For me, the Exp. ii 42 mm. just didn't have that "Rolex" feel. It seemed as though the issues I had were a result of a product that was rushed to market.
