Crown position

Am I the only one that’s annoyed by the crown not being aligned on my watch ? It falls 90 degrees past top center. Is it ok to back it off a bit for alignment or is that risky for water damage?

It's fine to back off a little. The watch is water resistant even if the crown isn't screwed down at all.

The point at which the crown stops will change as the gasket compresses over time, so if it's not aligned now you might find that in a year you're happier with it.

I'm sure your not alone. It doesn't phase me at all, only my Milgauss lines up. I'd be more annoyed though if I knew the crown wasn't fully closed and sealed tight.

Top Tip: Get a Dremel tool and grind the crown off, saves worrying about it. J/K

It’s the first thing no one ever notices because no one even notices the watch to begin with, unless a WIS on a mission to see if crown aligns.

Backing it off is fine but it doesn’t bother me one bit. When I got my first Rolex it did but I quickly got over it.

No you are not the only one annoyed

I know it can be a bother , but it is hard to get a watch with the crown that lines up perfectly.

I am a watchmaker and with the mechanics involved in how the tube screws into the case, and then how much or less the stem is screwed into the inside of the crown , it is luck of the draw as to if it is going to line up

No one cares but you. It's perfectly fine and not something to send it back for.

I wouldn't risk it, and if possible, just suck up the fact that even Rolexes have flaws.

Rolex care and that's why all their marketing shows it 100% aligned.

If it matters to them and they advertise it as aligned then it should be.

If it was meant to line up can you imagine the scene! - Much better to not test all our OCD tendencies in my opinion!

You should be fine to back it off a quarter of a turn
To verify you may choose to pressure test the watch with it in that position as well.

On a lighter note, you could indeed grind the logo off.
My preference would be an 8" bench grinder but a 9" angle grinder should be fine as long as you've got a good hold of it with the watch clamped down well onto a bench with the crown hanging over the edge
Alternately you could grab a PM Skydweller instead and FLICK the watch you currently have.

Ah ha, that would be "the ROLEX way".

Of course none of the watches I have ever owned of any brand have ever had the logo on the crown actually "line up" with a reference point of note.

Were you unaware of this glaring defect before you bought the watch?

My Air King 116900 lines up just perfect like your Milgauss. The DJ41 I just got doesn't. But like someone mentioned Rolex does say it should line up.. Go figure..

You'd know best. I trust what you're saying. Isn't it crazy how a good number of these actually DO line up though?? Strange...

Why do you feel consumed enough by it to then consider undoing the crown so it aligns, yet compromises the seal on the crown?

This is one thing that’s been brought up and discussed here many times as people feel unsettled by it. I’m extremely obsessive about things yet have never understood this particular concern.

Who’s going to see the crown if it aligns, or doesn’t for that matter?

If the crown was manufactured to align, then a whole set of threads would be talking about how their crowns were slightly off.

You can’t win!

Rolex publish photos on their site with he crowns the right way up. Let’s face it, though, we’ve established that there are many thing that Rolex claim or show in pictures, but the reality of somewhat different. I look at it purely as an illustration.

Rolex has never claimed the crown should line up when fully tightened. Even if it does, as the rubber gasket on the crown stem wears out and the crown position will change over time. There is nothing wrong with a misaligned Rolex emblem on the crown.

It’s actually a perfect specimen in every way. I don’t really look for this in a watch but it jumped out at me when I was inspecting the watch for defects under a macro lens when I first purchased. It’s no big deal but I have noticed the new releases are coming out damn near perfect as if Rolex is upping their quality control.

You have company. But I could care less about the crown lining up as it is not supposed to.

It’s my first Rolex so I guess I’m just spending to much time steering at it. It’s not a huge deal but it certainly looks nicer lined up.

When folks say the position changes over time...typically to what extent? And does the crown typically move clockwise or counterclockwise? Yes...these questions are silly, but curious anyway.
