If a watch is sound, it may only need to be regulated; all are adjustable. If the watch has not been regularly serviced, parts do wear out and tolerances become more loose. A properly serviced watch, with out-of-tolerance parts replaced, and modern lubricants, can run as well as when new. 50 years ago the variance would have been in the ~5 to 10 second per day range, so that is what I would expect.

It is a good idea to have it checked. Maybe all it needs is to be regulated. And if it hasn't been serviced for quite some time, that could also be a reason for the speedy gain. At any rate it's better to be safe than sorry.
