Tank XL - Shall I pull the trigger?

Hi guys

Tried on this Tank XL automatic today at Cartier Abu Dhabi. They’re asking retail 15,100 dhs which is about £3,100 GBP. No discount at all as Cartier boutiques don’t do discounts.

Anyways what’s your thoughts? I like it but still undecided. They’re holding it for me till tomorrow afternoon UAE time.

For context, I have a 116234, 126233 and a 126040 from Rolex, a Tudor GMT and a Cartier Tank MustDeCartier which is much smaller than this and was handed to me by father who bought it in 1990 so it’s a completely different design to this Tank XL.

Yes! Wife and i share ours. Get the bracelet and three or four straps (black, white, orange... my wife wears lavender leather with it). It's a great all-around timepiece. Classic!

One of those watches that belong on a strap and not on a bracelet - Furthermore, against the date window

Looks a bit generic on the bracelet and somewhat small for your wrist. I like bracelet taper and this one doesn't have any, making the whole piece seem more like a bracelet/jewelry piece than a watch (fine if you are Ok with the look, but not to my taste).

Did you try on the Santos de Cartier?

I decided not to buy it in the end but it's funny you say it looks small as I wear 36mm datejusts, although i feel they fit better perhaps because the case/lugs taper downwards whereas the Tank is like one straight slab.

They only had like 2 Santos watches and they were really small. I was told all Santos are now order only and aren't stocked in store as demand is so high...I was suprised to be honest.

Price depends on which strap, size and watch.

Nothing available in store, I was told Cartier don't keep straps in store anymore and are all made to order to limit their impact on the environment and animals. So instead of making a number of straps to be sold wasting leather/skins they'll only make them to order.

I ordered one for my Drive and the cost is 350 for a blue alligator strap.

Nice. Love that watch. So underrated. How long did it take for the new strap to arrive? And did they just send you the strap itself or another clasp as well?

I ask because I’m looking at the new tank must in the large size but I hate that it comes on the pebbled strap with the new buckle and not the classic Cartier clasp. I want to switch to an alligator type strap with the classic Cartier buckle but no one from Cartier has gotten back to me on options and cost.

I’ve always been a fan of the larger Cartier tanks — lots of strap options too!

It took around 2/3 weeks to arrive. It was just the strap , no clasp.
