Win or lose...

give it your best I say, and accept the results as they are.

Posted a picture two weeks ago about some birds living under our deck. Came home last Tuesday and found the nest down and the baby bird underneath the nest. This don't happen by chance and I knew the female had covered up the baby bird. Well, what to do next. Being a redneck and raising birds since I was young, you TRY this, knowing success is only 10%.

Picked up the bird using a paper towell, thus trying not to scent the bird, and put it back in its nest.

Since the nest fell and there was only one baby, I figured out this was a first time family. In a way survival of the fittest. So should I let nature take its course or intervene? Being a redneck with nothing to do that day I decided to play Darwin.

First step is to rebuild the nest. So, since a commercial I saw when I was a kid said, "plastic will change our lives", I went and got this....

Then placed what was left of the nest and baby bird and made a redneck condo....

Now, need to secure the redneck condo back near where the original nest was, so nothing like a little painters tape for a quick solution.

Had to be quick, so I screwed three paper plates back where the original nest was and then plopped the redneck condo with painters tape down and this was the result.

Went upstairs and covered the top of the deck with plastic so water would not drip down on the finished project.

The male flew the coup, as I expected, to go try to mate once more this spring. Just nature. The female sayed around and I waited a week to take a peek, and this is what I saw.

Moral of the story? Take a few minutes and try. That is all that is asked of us.

May I say you put more construction (and probably better materials) into that nest than most builders are putting into homes nowadays.

Sunflowers are legal but those 50lb bags of bird seed are another story

Excellent.
Why doesn't everyone understand this? Maybe if it was printed on money...

Good on you for helping the bird.

Well done

Like you say you have to be careful not to get human scent on the nest or the mother will abandon the nest.

We have a bird house at the end of our driveway. Each spring the baby birds would try to fly and fail. My basset hound used to walk around with the poor things in her mouth, not hurting them, just walking around. I miss that dog.

Aw, that is the sweetest story, Joe. I got a little misty-eyed (and it's not because I had to swallow that nasty cold pizza!)

Is that a little sparrow?

A task well done. Accepting the moment and doing your best is quite mindful......

Gee, thanks! Hmmm... I think we finished up the last of that pizza yesterday. Got some frozen vegetarian corndogs but I'm saving them to take along when I get over to Jim's house.
