Received the wrong watch, to my benefit

So I purchased online from a big box retailer that is known to carry grey market Rolexes from time to time.

I got the watch today, but they sent me the wrong one. I ordered a 126200, but the watch I got is a 126234 (white roman dial, oyster, fluted).

The watch otherwise looks brand new (has most of the stickers on it). Obviously no Rolex warranty card, but has the manual and 2 hangtags. Another weird thing is the hangtag itself also has 126200 as the model number. It's like they had everything associated with the 126200 but popped in a 126234.

I paid basically MSRP of a 126200, so I come out ahead $$$ wise but I also think I like the 126234 better. The fluted/oyster combo is super nice. I also really like the white dial and the Romans don't bother me like I thought they would. Just a classy looking watch.

BUT, I did get the wrong watch. Do I just shut up and keep it? I'm pretty sure they'd want me to just return the watch for a refund rather than tracking down a 126200 for me.

I would notify them you received the wrong watch. Let them sort out replacing it with what you ordered and getting the watch you didn’t order back to them.

Having gotten many wrong papers when buying used Rolex watches, here is what I think happened.

The original AD put the watch in the wrong box with wrong papers. A lot of AD's really do not pay close attention to that. When It made its way to Costco, or wherever you bought it, it got grouped with the other 126200's.
As far as they are concerned it is a 126200. They do not know the difference in models.
In their inventory, it is a 126200. If you send it back it will still be put with the other 126200's again.

I would just leave it alone, if you like it.

Yea, I chatted with them and it's frustrating as heck because they don't know the difference between models and don't seem to understand what happened. They said they'd investigate and get back to me with my options. I might end up just returning it, but then maybe I return a watch that according to them I didn't buy.

I guess one thing at a time, I'll wait and see what their investigation turns up.

Do you like the watch that they sent it to you? If you don't mind to keep it, you can explain to them and tell them that it's OK with you if they allow you to keep.

I vote for letting the retailer know. If it’s big, they’ll probably let you keep it and you’ll have a clean conscience. If it’s a small retailer, the mistake may be a big deal to them and you’ll be doing the right thing.

Integrity is hard to do when no one is looking, but from personal experience you get what you deserve in the end. Im sure that the company would be absolutely grateful to you for alerting them of the mistake. You might even get something in return as a thank you.

You did the right thing. When they call back, try to negotiate keep the watch for small premium because of your troubles and honesty.

If it's Costco, I bet they just say they don't know what went wrong, but to keep it if you're happy with it.

I agree with your actions, I personally wouldn't screw with cosmic karma. I'd be concerned that someone could lose their job when the error inevitably gets discovered. And then the kick to the crotch from the universe could be unpleasantly strong.

I believe the main reason large chains don't provide papers if they're a secondary supplier is to protect their primary sources. Costco offers a better warranty than Rolex however!!
