Explorer 214270 Vs DateJust

I've had my Explorer for 4 years, and whilst I absolutely love it, I'm still constantly glancing at it when I want to know the date.

So, I made the decision to upgrade it to a Datejust 41, with a black dial, smooth bezel, and jubilee strap, so it looks as close to the Explorer as I can get.

I'm interested in other opinions and comments before I pull the trigger at the AD.

As part-exchange, I should be able to get what I paid for it circa £4,300, but a note on the secondary market they are going for about £7,900! (am I making a mistake by Part Exchanging it?

Neil.

I don't think you can compare those two watches to be honest.
The overall look of both watches is completely different.

What do you mean with part exchanging?

I realise that the watches are different, but they both have black faces and the same case style and strap, which for me make them a similar look, even if the hands and numbers are different, the overall impression appears similar to me, so not too big a leap to go from one to another.

"Part Exchanging" i mean should i try and sell privately or just sell it to the AD or another dealer to put towards the cost of the Datejust?

I’d be willing to buy that explorer for a better price than the dealership haha, might be a good idea to sell then use the cash to buy the datejust

I'd think you'd want the Oyster bracelet if you want it to be close to the Exp.

It is a trade off, if you do a part trade for the new DJ then you get less then you could sell it for on a forum. However you don't have to deal with all those idiot tire kickers that ask a lot of stupid questions about the Explorer.

If you can get the total amount you bought the watch for in a trade in and not lose any money that you paid back when you got the watch then that is a good deal. The other thing is to just keep the watch you have and lean to not look for the date.

It was a bit hard for me also until I realized that every time I needed to know the date, I had my phone or was at my computer and both had the date. Add to the fact that my car infotainment system also has it and I discovered I really did not need a watch with a date.

I think you will regret selling the Explorer in the long run, is it a a MK 1 or MK 2 39mm out of interest? I had an Oyster Date for years but as other posters have said I just use my phone or car infotainment system to look up the date quickly if I need to now. The Explorer will be a far more desirable watch and hold it’s value better in the long run.

Keep your explorer & use your cellphone for the date.

I would not get rid of nor trade the Explorer. It is becoming my favorite over Daytona’s, BLNR, and a Datejust II 116300 rhodium with Arabic’s.

The ExpI is almost the perfect watch. It’s not that hard to make note of the date another way.

I would add a white 126300 and have a great pair.

The dealer is not your friend. That is an abominable price for your explorer. Horrible trade. You will 100% kick yourself in a few years or sooner if you make this dumb trade.
Keeping explorer and saving for a watch with date > private selling >>>> trading to a dealer.

I would not trade the Explorer. It can be described as an almost perfect Rolex depending on what your desires are. Nothing wrong with the DJ, it just does not give me the history feel that the Explorer or Submariner do. As far as needing the date, you do not need it. I know what todays date is so I know what it was yesterday and tomorrow. I also know how many days are in each month and I even know when leap year is. So needed, no. Preferred, maybe. Keep your Explorer as I believe you will regret selling it and look for an addition to your collection, even if you need to save for awhile. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

The problem is I don't need two watches. It will be my daily wearer.

I have no interest in long term value of a watch, it's not why I am buying it for.

I want something functional that does the job i need and looks classy and understated on my wrist.

I can't even remember what day of the week it is lol, and I don't use my phone in that way, so it's never handy when i need to know the date.

I'll see what the datejust looks like on my wrist and go from there.

As for trading in or selling, where have people had the best expereince in the UK.

I'd be happy to sell privately, but where can i do that safely?

Try looking at your phone or computer for the date. How many times per day do you need to know the date??

I am not sure which dealer but I would try Watchfinder as they offered over retail recently from my Explorer 1.

Personally think you may regret it as the Explorer really is the perfectly daily, plus if you want something understated I would forget the DateJust 41 as it shouts Rolex all day long.

Perhaps I should do away with the watch completely and just use my phone for the time and date :-)

I went to my AD today and looked at the Dj 41. Even in the spec, I'd want, it is still too blingy for me, I don't like the high polish of the case and much prefer the satin look of the Explorer.

So it's back to being blissfully unaware of what day it is and the date. First world problems :-)
