Finally, my first Rolex!! Do you remember yours?

Friends, yesterday I finally picked up my first Rolex… a 16750 matte dial from around 1983. I’ve been searching for the right Rolex for a LONG time, and I finally decided to take the plunge.

I picked it up from Wanna Buy a Watch here in LA. I’ve been to the shop probably 20 times over the last 3 years, always drooling on the pieces and annoying the sales staff with incessant questions. The only thing I ever picked up was a NATO strap for a Speedmaster.

Every day I checked their website (along with the boards and a bunch of other vintage watch sites), and patiently waited for the right watch at the right price at the right time. I’ve grabbed a few watches during that time but never bit the bullet on a Rolex, always a little nervous to spend that kind of money on a watch.

This watch just spoke to me. I love that it is a matte dial, and I like that it combines a lot of the old features of a 1675 with some of the convenience of a 16750 (the quickset). The watch was in great condition, it's as old as I am, the price was right and the guys in the shop talk so lovingly of Rolex that it is hard to walk out without a new watch.

I’ve owned a few nice watches over the years- multiple Omegas, an IWC, etc., but this Pepsi is even cooler on my wrist than it was in my (nightly) dreams. I dig everything about it- the even patina of the dial, the old school method of setting the second time-zone, the sharp color of the bezel insert (which isn’t original, but is authentic).

I’m really happy, and HOPE this will keep me from lusting after a new watch for at least 5 or 10… days.

Do you remember how you felt when you got your first Rolex? What was it? What was the story? Do you have pictures?

Let’s relive the glory days!

(sorry about the quality of the pictures- bad lighting, an iPhone and an excitedly shaky hand)

That looks like a good one. Hands and dial match well and no corrosion on the hands.

If you hold that you'll make money in the end if you need to sell it.

Here's my first...Still have it 30 years later.

Last night I had the opportunity to go check out Space Shuttle Endeavor at an event. Terrible picture, and for that I apologize, but I couldn't resist the chance to take a wrist shot.

That was my first buy! I wore it every single day until six months ago when I finally put it in the safe favor of a 114270
