I want to purchase a Montblanc to add to my little collection. I have a Pelikan pen that I bought last year but it is a rollerball. This time around I want to purchase a fountain pen. During that time I was told by many that the 149 is the popular choice.

Any experiences with this pen? Do I have to keep "cap end" up? Does it leak often?

Can I get it in white gold or platinum? (sorry haven't searched)

None of my 9 MB fountain pens leaks, although I got only one 149.
Sure you can get the 149 in full platinum. The standard resin 149 only comes with gold trim, no plat trim though.

I have not owned the 149 but other MB fountain pens and I always kept them cap screwed on and clipped on my shirt pocket. I only had issues running out of ink cuz piston filled and a little messy if I did not take my time. I have 2 MB rollerballs that are retro.

They are an excellent pen but you also might want to consider others as well.
For the same sort of money you could have a Nakaya which are hand made by artisans in Japan.

Sure you won't have the name but you will have hand lacqured finish that takes up to 3 months to complete, you will have a nib customised to your exact requeirments!

You will have not a plastic body (MB precious resin is marketing speak for plastic!) but a hand turned ebonite (hard rubber that all great pens in the past were made out of!) body and cap. They are not piston fillers but cartridge converters which is handy and if you really want to push the boat out you can have any number of exquisite finishes done to it!

Own many many pens 149 a favorite. Very little issues. Have several metal MBLE and the problem is u cannot post the caps they will scratch the end of the pen.

I would actually try and hold one to see if the size suits you. They're pretty big pens and if it's too large, it may cause you fatigue in your writing hand.

I love my 149. No issues with leaks regardless of how you carry or store the pen.

As Gerry says, you need to write with one before committing to it. It is a very large pen and also be careful on the nib size that you choose. The nib on this model can be so large that a fine actually writes like a medium on a smaller instrument.

I've got the MB LeGrand. It is one size down from the 149 and IMHO much nicer size to hold (at least for me).

As a bonus it is the black resin with platinum trimmings.

What I really like about mine is the nib: Double Broad Oblique.

Anyway, it's not just the pen, but the nib is important too.

^i once obsessed over the 149 but wound up purchasing the Legrand as Stevo mentioned a size smaller because the Legrand was just more comfortable to use IMHO.

I checked out those sites, and Nakaya makes some beautiful pens indeed. I'll keep them in mind. In the meantime, My new Mont Blanc will have to do.

I don't think you can get the 149 in black with platinum trimmings, at least that's what I've been told and I haven't seen anything to the contrary.

Steve, you are correct. The 149 currently only comes with the gold furniture.

The 146 is the largest size that comes with the platinum fittings.

Also, there are folks who put platinum plating on top of the gold platings in the standard 149. The effect is very very nice. Of course, one would be frankening the pen so voiding the warranty etc. So what :-)
