Actually, it’s still a puzzle to me what is the difference among independent, microbrand or boutique brands. Or if there is any difference at all.
An argument could even be made that Rolex and Patek are both independents. |

Of course: some brands a considered but really aren't, and others are but people don't consider them to be... "Independent" is a buzz word lately. Like "In-house" or "synergize" or "vertically integrated". You know how this industry works... It is divided by extremely thick trend lines. |

Mannesmann used to own a holding entity called Les Manufactures Horlogères, which owned IWC and I believe a portion of JLC. The driving force behind both brands at the time was Günther Blümlein. After the wall fell, he partnered up with Walther Lange to rebuild Lange, which was built around a majority interest of Mannesmann. Against this backdrop, it’s safe to say that the then parent of IWC and majority shareholder of JLC probably financed most of Lange‘s resurrection and in the person of Günther Blümlein, put one of the greatest managers of the watch industry of that time at the helm. Whether or not IWC and JLC as such contributed a lot is less certain. AP used to have a large minority stake in JLC at the time. They would certainly not have been pleased if Mannesmann had drawn on the company’s resources to build up something else AP had no interest in. So it’s unlikely much would have come from there that would not have been provided at arms length.

As for the premise of the thread, I am very fond of Lange and Vacheron, though neither are independents of course. The independent that best fits that very classical way of going about watchmaking is Laurent Ferrier, which is probably where I would go. Or to Rexep if I wanted to put a bit more money into something more likely to retain its value.

I would love to own a watch from Gönefeld or Urban Jürgensen. They are some of my favorite watches in terms of both aesthetics and movement finishing.

Have a Urban Jurgensen and Parmigiani. Next on the “Indy” radar is Grönefeld.

Which Independent Watch Brand(s) would you consider next ?
I own a Ming and have a 2nd Ming and a Czepak incoming yet this year. I own an Alexander Shorokhoff, Sinn, Bremont, Oris and Vertex. Some are no different than others and some are quite unique. I like limited production, unique designs and good quality. I don’t think in the mainstream affordable segments that independents are much different than conglomerate manufacturers. But I do believe AS and Ming are somewhat different than most. However, I would love to get an RGM since it’s American made!

Which would you get next?
Dornblüth Regulator OR Habring COS Chronograph? Or which D. Dornblüth & Sohn or Habring2 timepiece is worth considering? |

Dornbluth for me. The Habring is legit though. But I feel the finishing is so much more incredible on any Dornbluth as Habring looks more brutal and industrial with the movement. I own a Dornbluth 99.1 so I’m definitely bias. But I’ve almost pulled the trigger on Habring several times and just think the minimalist nature would get boring too quick.

The Habring is more complicated i think and the COS is a specialty of the couple. But am leaning Dornbluth myself. Maybe go for the German first and then the Austrian next. |

I’m very interested in adding a Ming also, and am curious about the teasers of the “mosaic” they posted on their site as well as on Instagram. Anyone have move info on these?

I believe the ming "mosaic" was uploaded on April 1st, and while they admitted they weren't fully joking about the design, I recall they also said it wasn't something that was around the corner. So don't hold your breath waiting for that design to be realized in a watch.
