Read my reply again and this time please notice there are two separate lines which have nothing to do with one another.

That is just awesome... I wonder how long they looked for it (days per week, hours per day( until they found it 14 months later... That could have been very very expensive |

Remarkable story all round even with the insurance company.
A freakish event one is unlikely to perhaps see repeated again in ones lifetime

Good story.
Regarding duration, actually, as I've come to understand from my reading on this forum, the effect of salt water even on stainless steel would eventually rust the steel away. According to that, at some point, though I don't know when, there would visible and permanent damage. Maybe there already is. Perhaps a year under 100 feet of salt water is considered nothing for this type of steel, but what about two or three? The clock started ticking on what salt water does to stainless steel the minute it fell in the water, and at some point he would have known it was time to call off the search because there would be little left of the watch. There are other threads on the long-term effects of salt water on a Rolex somewhere on TRF, and there are articles on the net regarding how marine environments corrode stainless steel. I'm only going on memory here, but I hope memory serves. If my understanding is correct, he was lucky to get that watch out when he did. Those gaskets weren't going to last forever either. |

WOW!!! Amazing!
Truly a testament to the quality of the engineering and materials that Rolex uses in their watches. ONE YEAR in salt water... WOW!!! |

Very cool story!!!
This must be rolex reason for using 904l steel with higher corrosion resistance. Never know when you watch will spend a year+ at the bottom of the ocean. Prob why the bracelets are 904l now too. |

Very nice story. I love it, I would like to see if Rolex reacts and asks for the specific watch to see the results of the sea. But mind you, it was immersed, not sprayed, so O2 had no effect on it. If it was exposed alternatively in water-air-water etc, the rust effect would be more obvious.
The "goldish" color is rust, and I would like to see the surfaces, bost SS and gold, after the cleaning BEFORE the polishing. The owner deserves a "plaquet" from Rolex for his achievement. PS Thanks God I have also a Sub and take only short showers after my dives

That's wild. Thanks for sharing. I love stories like that. Rolex used to use them in their ads from the 60's 70's.

This reminds me of a story an AD told me the other day: a customer came in with an old SD he found on a dry lake bed. AD said watch was about 30 years old. When the guy brought it to AD, they wounded and it worked!
