Does Rolex Hate Patina

I had to send my R serial Exp II to RSC for service they recommended an overhaul, new crown, and a new dial!!!!

Dial the dial has lovely patina on the lume, it's gorgeous and it's a T<25 dial who would ever want to change that.

Of course, I declined, but I wonder does RSC see it as a defect? Sure working lume would be nice but not at the expense of losing the very thing about the watch that gives it character.

Rolex are not interested in any vintage patina look ,they just want to replace everything they can at high cost, to make watch look as new its that simple.

What happens to all those "vintage" dials that Rolex replaces?

I wonder if there is a box full of T dials...or if they toss them, I need figure when trash pick-up is and go dumpster diving one night...

Yes yes. That is why RSC wanted $2350 to service my zenith Daytona. In the end it is 921.50 with shipping both ways.

Rolex just aim to get the watch operating as it was originally intend to. So does the tritium still glow at night? Answer no..... Therefore as far as Rolex are concerned, it needs replacing Simple....... It's only us collectors that add value to what is effectively a no longer fully functioning dial
So steer well clear of RSC with your valuable and much loved vintage. But at least they now ask if you want a less valuable watch returned to you

Its just like when you take your car into the dealer. Their objective is to get it back to "new condition" as its good for their bottom line, and they don't want people walking around with cars/watches that don't look/perform as new. too much risk with someone saying, " my watch/car is a piece of junk because it doesn't lume/or whatever." So, while I love patina, the casual observer probably does not and it most likely doesn't reflect well on the brand.

Yes they hate anything old, even if it is beautiful. They just want them all to look new. A guy i met once had his sub 3 6 9 dial switched for a new dial, which was a shame as it had a beautiful patina. He got to keep the dial though which was nice

Blimey bit harsh, Rolex want to revert the watch to a new condition, pretty good service and when compared to other service costs of watches is not bad. Its only WIS's/collectors that want a beat up look - me included

Aside from servicing cost and making a watch new, Rolex should definitely look at what Panerai is doing with the faux patina dials in their line up. These watches have huge following.

Ultimately, the decision is up to the owner, if I'm interpreting this correctly.

It's good that Rolex has the capacity to restore a watch to a like-new condition, as not all are interested in their watches becoming collectors' items.

I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, but currently I don't much care what happens to my watches after I'm gone and they will be with me till I'm gone.

In france (paris service center) you can keep the original dial if you want, or ask to keep the watch unpolished. Try to insist, or send it to bob ridley!

The best thing to ever happen to Rolex is Patina! Each watch has aged differently and that's part of the beauty. Shame on you Rolex for trying to ruin that!
