Does Rolex Insert New Movements Without Changing the Model?

I was talking to an AD the other day and he said that Rolex does not insert a new movement into a watch without also changing something else about the watch. Is this true? When Rolex started putting the 3186 into the GMT, did they change anything about the watch? Are there other examples?

So reading rumors of new movements in a lot of the SS sport series, basically what you are saying (Or AD) is that they will modify something else? To what extent? Just wondering, because I have heard the text color maybe changing as a throwback so could this be a big enough change or would it be something larger like clasp style etc?

.

3186 in the Gmt II and Explorer II have been an exception.

When movment changes, model number always changes also and most of time something else changes too.

When 3000 was replaced by 3130 in Sub/OP/Airking in year 2000, model were added an "M" for "modified". 14060 became 14060M, 14000 became 14000M, 14203 became 14203M ... For Explorer at the same time it became 114270 from 14270.

Having some kind of cosmetic difference would make sense, even if very subtle.
When the Sub is updated, I anticipate some minor changes to the case to achieve more streamline lugs to bracelet, much like the Deepsea.

The minimum cosmetic change may be just the model designation engraved on the case.

Maybe they'll put a crown between swiss and made?

If they put coloured bracelet screws some would call it a new model.

So if you had a watch with a 3185 movement and shipped it in for an overhaul, could you ask for a 3186?

I'd think when they put the 32XX movement in a watch it will be with a new reference number and perhaps some other changes to make the watch feel 'updated' in some way.
