Icon5 Does Rolex Do Anything To The Fluted Bezel During Service?

Hey guys just a quick question,,

I know the watch comes back looking pretty much new after service but I'm curious about the fluted bezel? I've picked up a few scratches on my bezel already that are fairly noticeable when the light hits them right.

Does Rolex polish up the fluted bezel when it's serviced? Can that even be done?

I was thinking I'd have someone do it here after a year or so but I fear them wearing the flutes flat and it looking terrible.

Any input is appreciated

Actually that's a very good question, Brandon.

Wonder what kind of tool they'd need to polish a zig-zag bezel?!

I'm worried that it isn't possible with out wearing down the peaks!

Scratches don't really bother me because I know in 5 years they'll be gone.

but

I'm afraid that in 10 years time my bezel will probably look like hell if there's no way to clean it up lol

Don't worry, Brandon. I'm sure Rolex must have a couple of zig-zag dremels in their workshop!!

I would think it would be like anything that got polished a certain amount of material would be taken off.

But I would also think under normal circumstance whatever is considered normal that over the years we would still be left with a real nice looking bezel.

Do you guys know if the bezel comes off during servicing?

At least then it likely wont be put back on the exact same way and maybe then the scratches wouldn't be as noticeable from the new angle lol

I assume the whole watch is disassembled, including the bezel (it would be difficult to polish the case with the bezel in place).

From what I have heard - RSC return the finish on the whole watch to asnear new as possible .. this must include some activity on the bezel?

My DJ returned from a service recently and the bezel was polished up and sparkling.

I would imagine that any polishing is done vetically in line with the flutes rather than horizontally, across the peaks, lessening the chance of making the flutes blunt?

Thanks!

For what it's worth, I know for sure that Rolex replaces the aluminum inserts found on the pre- ceramic subs and gmts, and it does not charge for the replacement during a service. However, seeing how your fluted bezel is GOLD and white gold for that matter, I believe RSC will polish it, and if the fluted bezel is not salvageable, RSC will probably charge you

My guess is that they would not touch the fluted bezel on DJ or any other bezel for that matter. They only polish the case and bracelet. If the bezel is damaged then they would replace it. I say this because I have seen a Sub come back from RSC nicely polished like new except the bezel. The marks on the bezel were still there...

May be they will surprise you

My mom's Lady DJ went in for service with a very dull fluted bezel. It came back as shiny as the new ones.

If they've got jigs for polishing cases I'd be willing to bet they have jigs for polishing fluted bezels as well. No personal experience to draw on, but the fluted bezels have been around a very long time, and I'm sure they have a method worked out to deal with them.

Are you guys sure that they polish fluted bezels? As far as i know for daytonas they exchange scratched bezels...it's impossible to polish the tachymeter without remove the numbers.

Cheers

I don't think polishing and then painting the printed bezel on Daytonas and Explorer IIs would be cost efficient. Buying a new bezel would be cheaper IMHO.

The fluted bezel, however, is always a precious metal. polishing would be cheaper than replacement IMO.

My 23 year old TT DJ was serviced late last year. It had been serviced twice before and it had been 11 1/2 years since its last servicing. The bezel was scratched and the high points somewhat worn. I inquired about replacing the bezel, but the technician at the RSC said it was functionally great and would polish up nicely. Here is a close up shot after it got back. I think they did a great job considering condition going in. FWIW

Looks nice.

The bezel is worn down a bit...so the answer appears to be at least one RSC will polish.

Seems risky to have anyone attempt it. I'll just beat it up for a few years and get a new one once it's all roughed up

Give it 25 years Brandon, then replace the bezel.
I wonder what the price of 18k gold will be in 2035?
