Rolex Oyster Chronograph Anti-Magnetic ref 6034
Hi,
Found this Rolex from my father that passed away some years ago, I dont have a clue about watches. I know the history from the watch, it was a gift to my grandfather when he saved a crew on a ship when they hit a mine from WW2. Guess its a common model? |

Extremely rare and Sought after model, I'm no expert but that watch is probably a $20k+ watch depending on if it's all original
if its gold which it looks like in the pics then it could be worth $40k+ eric clapton sold his with the gold band in good original condition and it was expected to sell for 60-$74k http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=266661 http://www.chrono24.com/en/rolex/pre...-id2093742.htm http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/2010/2/...ock-legen.html |

Not common at all. If all is as you say it is, that's a true treasure. The story is even better than the piece. A truly great piece of history.

What a wonderful watch, absolutely beautiful. My recommendation is to keep it and hand it down. It is already on its third generation within your family, wear it with pride and hand it down to someone you trust to take care of it. History of the watch is fantastic, and now it is an heirloom. Keep it that way, if you can afford to.

These are ca. early '50s (with Super Oyster crown), not from the WWII era. Is yours gold or gold plated, or is that just the lighting making it look gold and not steel?

That watch is post-WWII. Are you sure about how it was handed down to your grandfather ?

With a three-color dial this is a steel 6034 Anti-Magnetic, looking gold as a result of poor lighting. The watch looks nice, and seems original from what little of the dial that can be seen. I have sold three of these in the past 12 months, between 17K-24K. These are nice watches, fairly uncommon in the market these days, but they have fallen a bit out of favor with younger collectors (as indeed have most of the 1940s and early-1950s models). The flavors of the month now tend more towards 1960s-80s steel sports models. Nice watch!

Hi :)
To explain some questions, a ship hit a mine from WW2 in 1952 my grandfather was captain on a oil-tanker and saved the crew from freezing to death in the cold water in the North Sea, so watch was handed over to him same year and the watch is from 1952 I think? Serial number" 847xxx and its yellow gold. Have a lovely day :) |

Wonderful watch, and quite valuable in solid gold. The dial looks pristine.

Looks as it is in top condition ! Especially after the "dip" is had taken in the cold waters of the north sea !!! In such case, there must be a set of docs from service, etc. It does not look like a "neglected" watch.
I would very much like to have one.

Not to detract from the beauty of the watch, or its heirloom quality to you, but the dial appear to be either an excellent refinish or a later service dial. N.B. that "T SWISS T" is a '60s or later designation, as tritium was not used in Rolex watches earlier than about 1963.

Dear Adam,
You for sure correct, my father send the watch for service at Rolex in Swiss sometimes in 1970's guess that they changed the dial then. Have Google around and found one artikel that Rolex was in favor to change the dials due to radiation. Unfortunately the orginal dial is gone forever. Cheers Thomas |

Awesome an beautiful watch. Even with a service dial, this is a very rare bird. Curent;y SS 6034 with very bad dials are listed for $16K. In 2003 Christie's sold an 18K one for $30,000. I would be surprised if you cannot get $50,000 for this watch.

i have to agree a very rare watch and the price would be above 30k for this example even with a service dial

Trying to research the sinking of that ship, and hopefully find out more about your father's actions, but the registry shows no ship sinking August 7th, 1952, and no ship that year (that i could find anyway) which was sunk by a mine.
