Gilt GMT opinions
Hi everyone,
I posted a while back on this GMT, and had the chance to go and get a few better pictures today. Serial is 1.13mil, which dates it to ?1964-65. Unable to get the back off with my ball opener, and didn't want to force anything, so have left it for now. Would just like to get some opinions on the condition. As per the owner it was worn by his father, and himself for 35+ years, then placed in a drawer when the band broke, so its definitely seem some use as seen in the bezel and case, but the soft chamfers can still be seen. Haven't had many gilt rolexes in hand, but the dial still looks very glossy, with no noticeable cracks. (again open to opinions!) The hand lume worries me a little as it looks a bit greener than the dial, and not sure if the hands would be original themselves - again asking for the experts to please chime in! Thanks! |

Gilt hands from this era can have a slightly greenish tone. I wouldn’t necessarily doubt it. Check it with a loupe and see if structure looks the same as the dial. What could have happened here is that they turned more green as moisture got into the case.
Hard to tell the glossiness of the dial but you would want it to be perfectly even like a piece of glass. The chipped lume would bother some people.

From what i could tell the dial was nice, and couldn't see imperfections - it looked to be on the plexi. But I will be able have another look if needed later this week. Good to know about the hands :) |

Looks great from here. Hard to tell what, if anything’s is on the dial or if it’s only on the crystal. I agree the hands seem to be original

The crown guards seem pretty asymmetrical? Is it from wear? Extreme polishing?

Personally never been a fan of the green lume, but happy to be proven wrong

I think it is normal for the asymmetric of the crown guard from the PCG case. My gmt crown guard exhibits the same but more balance in crown guard size as pictured. Mine is 1.0 mil serial which is very close to OP watch Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I've definitely seen significantly unbalanced crown guards even on an unpolished vintage Rolex before. Green lume too. Standards weren't what they are today...

Not a Gilt owner, but it looks honest and the lume and the insert is so alluring.

Overall package is really good. Love the band it was on. Gotta see the dial under a clean plexus or out of case.

Thanks for all the input everyone! Ended up getting the watch - gave the plexi a bit of a clean and it looks great! Also got the back off and the inside of the case back is stamped 63 :)

Thanks! It's a cracking piece - just sorting out where to service and get it cleaned a little. Esp the lume that is stuck to the underside of the plexi! - the dial looks really clean :)
