Cellini for the ‘Sophisticated’?

I took my Cellini into the local Rolex repair shop for a replacement Rolex band. The 60 year old career Rolex watchmaker came out to talk about my 5112 model. He said that in the nineties the Rolex watchmakers called people who wore Cellini ‘sophisticates’. He ask was I one? I told him...no just like the watch. Anyway found an advertisement on the web for Cellini owners that matched what the watchmaker said. So if you own a Cellini you now have a title.

CELLINI

Revered as the refined guardian of time, the Rolex Cellini collections celebrate the eternal elegance of a timeless classic watch while adding the flare of a contemporary spin without sacrificing functionality. True to its elegantly noble tradition and named after the Italian Renaissance artist, Benvenuto Cellini, the Rolex Cellinis are finely crafted exclusively with an 18ct Everose or a solid 18k white gold case. Designed for the sleek sophisticate, these Rolexes are quintessential dress watches.

Never seen a Cellini in the wild - the moonphase that was posted here today was stunning as well. They aren't too common though, are they?

A nice looking dress watch. I would like to see them in yellow gold as well, and with better looking hands.

I haven't seen one in the flesh but the platinum/glacier dial 5241/6 Cellini looks awesome.

At the price point it seems like a relative bargain to get into the platinum/glacier dial watch.

I agree. Cellini is a bargain. The 5461 is substantially cheaper and better looking than the PP 5960 that has the platinum/black dial.

Thanks for the responses. I was looking at the Rolex website focusing on their ambassadors. They have ambassadors that are or were explorers, racers, famous deep sea divers, tennis players, golfers, etc., who wear every Rolex but Cellini.

Rolex promotes Cellini in very few places that I’ve seen. So it’s an interesting line for Rolex. It’s a niche within Rolex.

Glad that the posters had some nice things to say.

Love a moon phase on a dress watch and think that the Cellini is a good looking dress watch. But why is the moon phase on my grandfather clock so much easier to understand than the Cellini's moon phase???

Lol. They are right on top of each other. Look near the stack in the center and you can tell.

Any serious watch owner should have at least one nice leather strap on wrist.

The most gorgeous Rolex dress watch will forever remain the 6062. A watch I'll likely never own.

Rolex just isn't a dress watch manufacturer. They try but many companies execute it much better. They are going to have to bring in some serious watchmakers/artisans to deliver luxurious hand finished movements and elegant case profiles.

Interesting information on the Dark Star ⭐️.

Rolex did a nice job on the 5112/5115 series. Actually it lined up with the equivalent Patek at the time. The design Rolex created is still used by other Swiss dress makers today, just in 38-42mm. The flat, not rounded, case edges was the change from omega.

Here’s some shots of the one I wear occasionally. It’s a 1995 model.

Yes and his game sucks. The extra 2-3 ounces makes a big difference playing golf. He should go back to the Danos.

Rolex should have done a better background check. Benvenuto Cellini was a philandering murderer and convicted sexual abuser. Even a glance through his Wikipedia page reveals this, and more.

Fascinating, I just did a quick read. So where did the inspiration to name this watch line come from?

I'm guessing it was more from his artwork than his social life. He's still a revered Renaissance figure. There's a bust of him on the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, right opposite the Rolex AD.

Rolex must have hired the modern art auctioneer at Christies or Sotheby's to write that.

Not just for the sophisticate, but the sleek sophisticate. Whatever that might mean.
