ATT charges $20 per mb while roaming. It was a rude awakening upon returning from my first trip abroad with an iPhone. A quick call to customer service and they added an international data plan retroactively and saved me hundreds

I miss the blackberry international data plan they once offered

I'm guessing the tower is about ~30m/100 ft tall, location is on the edge of the freeway north.

I hate to say it, but I could have told you that....International roaming is horrendous, especially data!!
You need to get that Iphone unlocked buddy.. Google out Iphone unlock and you'll find there are suppliers of apps and downloads to do this..John should be able to help you with this!
Black Rain is one that comes to mind although not sure if this is still current with the later models.
I unlocked mine for that reason and use it when I travel to the States or Aus. for this reason, to use a local carrier..My whole 5 weeks in Aus. only cost me the $49 pay & go with Data included..and I used it alot!!
You'll need it for that next visit to China!

An expensive lesson for sure.....
I guess no beer this weekend?!?!?!:

You could have spent all that on my birthday present

ALL the cellphone providers LOVE to do this to their customers. They absolutely live for it and from it. They adore burying monumentally huge, gouging costs for various services in the fine print, and then they laugh themselves sick with delight when they can send out a bill for hundreds or even thousands for a single month's 'service'. I'll bet your provider had to have a cigarette and a nap when they sent your invoice out. I hope they at least used a condom! They get an even bigger laugh while they assure you there's 'nothing they can do' about the ripoff. There is, of course, but you have to have a LOT of clout to get them to cancel the overcharge.
