Incoming Grand Seiko 60th Anniversary SBGP007G
This is one of this year's special editions for 60 years of GS in 2020.
40mm steel case ; 10.9mm so not too thick on a side profile if dressing up ; dark blue dial can look almost black depending on the light - there's no lume but the hands and hour markers have such a crisp and shiny finish they'll catch the light from nearby street signs or buildings and twinkle for you. And the 'dead space' in the bottom half of the dial that might disappoint with the normal quartz movement is smartly spiced-up here, with the five-pointed gold star which waves at you on a sunny afternoon and says, "I'm a special version of the 9F85 movement, that's accurate to 5 seconds a year". A nice feature of this movement (even if it didn't have the excellent accuracy rating and thermal compensation to keep it up in all weathers) is that the hour hand moves in one-hour increments while it keeps on ticking, allowing you to change timezone without having to reset your minutes and seconds. Not a killer feature, but nice to have. Need a better lens than my camera phone (or more effort on my part than I could be bothered with this afternoon) to pick up the limited edition '2020' dial pattern and do it justice, so I haven't included a super close up. When I do, I can include the steel caseback, which has a gold disc in the middle with an engraved GS lion to remind you (if not entirely obvious from the front and well-polished sides) that you've bought something with proper craftsmanship, not just 'some cheap quartz', as well as it being a limited edition (mine 19xx out of 2500 being produced this year). |

Congrats! The special GS quartz--indicated by the star above 6 o'clock--is simply awesome! Terrific choice!
