Help with dial color choice on 5170g

Was wondering if anyone had any advice on whether the white or black dial 5170g which is now discontinued in white gold was a better buy. I love the way they both look and have the opportunity to buy either one. I would like to take into account future value, desirability, etc. thank you all in advance!!!

I just tried both at my AD

For me the white is nicer.

All personal preference, I'm not sure anyone knows which is going to be more desirable in the future. Neither one is particularly in demand at present, although I think it is a great watch. I prefer the black for the larger sub dials and numerals. I also dislike the pulsometric scale on the white.

Thank you all , I was asking because my understanding was that the black dial was only produced for a year or so. Would that make a difference in the future over the white?

If buying from an AD or grey dealer you should be getting a significant discount on these. As for future value retention I would not expect much as they are readily available. Now on a more positive note both are really nice and have their own charm. I would choose the white dial out of the two because it is more versatile if you add a brown or navy blue strap.

White

I think the black dial has legibility issues, When I looked at it the hands easily blended into the black dial in most light making it hard to tell the time. In a low light situation it would impossible to tell the time, I thought.

White dial

new style on white gold would be nice in this reference. The 5170 is really a watch which should be highly desirable but for some reason it is not. You can buy the Lange for 35K used which is just as nice and that is a lot of the problem.

Black is sexier but very hard to read the time. I vote for the white dial.

As others have mentioned, black dial watches including the 5170G can have legibility concerns, especially in dim lighting.

If you are purchasing for mainly investment purposes and not planning to wear the watch very much, the legibility may not be a big deal though.

The 5170 is a great chronograph. However the imbalance between supply and demand has led to low secondary market prices. It certainly hurts those who bought new, but may be a good deal for those shopping for pre-owned.

I prefer (and own) the white dial, but both are nice. Nobody knows future values, so I'd just buy what you like better

I have the white.

I like hem all. The black dial does not have great legibility.

For what it's worth, I was very surprised how much I liked the cream dial 5170R in person.

Look at Gus's strap choices for his White Dial and that should seal the deal

So that implies that the 5170J is the first true in house Chrono from Patek and so it will be forever in time.

First inhouse manual wind chrono, but pre dated by inhouse automatic chrono.

Yes however who can say what it will mean in the future?
It is a good looking watch yet was not A great seller....like Newmans Daytona.

The dials of the J and the white dial G have strong ties to the vintage pieces.

The black dial G and the R versions have somewhat blazed their own path.
As I mention up above the cream dial R really looked fantastic in person.

We finally have seen the P and it is a bit of a departure from what we were expecting.

If an A is made I would absolutely like one ... I would say an A would kick the cr@p out of the J regardless of it being first

Most of the time the best answer is buy it because you like it and want to wear it.

Interestingly Patek released the ladies chrono, Ref 7071 before they released the men's 5170 using the same in-house manual chrono movement.
