Question...so I purchased my first Rolex recently, DJ41. I also have my father in law's old 34mm DJ from the late 60s. Now that I've purchased a new Rolex, I have an itch to purchase one more watch...a sport watch for weekends and casual situations. Should I buy a cheaper Longines or save for a bit and purchase an older 40mm Explorer II? I don't like the newer 42mm explorer.

Get a Rolex. It's happened a thousand times. Buy a different brand to acquire faster/cheaper and still want the Rolex. Which is eventually bought anyway making the stand in piece either a loss on a flip or just sitting around never worn... effectively a speed bump in getting you to the watch you want.

There's nothing wrong with buying a "cheaper" watch, if you truly want it. Don't expect a cheaper watch to hold you over though if you really have your heart set on something else. It never really works out. You just spend a lot more money and end up with a watch you never really warm up to.

The Ex2 would make a fine choice btw, and congrats on the DJ41! Let's see some pics.

16570 is a great choice. Black or white dial....can't go wrong.

Sub...always a Sub

Although I do wear a 20 year old 16570 Polar Exp II quite often and they can be found for a very reasonable price. IMO the best "value" out there for a sports Rolex.

I'm a big fan of the 40mm Explorer II (42mm is too big for me) and I'm saving for it now. I've thought of getting something else as a stop gap, but realize that it would be a waste. Nothing but a Rolex will do. As for your DJ, all DJs from 45 on were 36mm up until the DJII and today's DJ41. Perhaps it just looks little compared to the 41 which you have. Either that or it's a Date as opposed to DJ.

Save and buy the Rolex. I won’t even attempt to add up the money I wasted buying other brands and then winding up getting the Rolex in the end.

You're probably correct, it's a 34mm date and yes now it does look small compared to my DJ41.

1) Settling always costs you more in the long run.
2) You just got a Rolex (or two). Maybe chill for a bit before buying another? I would enjoy and appreciate what you just got rather than immediately setting your sights on the next conquest.

I'd say to save. Longines is a nice brand, but I can tell you firsthand that it won't scratch your Rolex itch. If you did go to sell it in the future, you'd like take a bath on the flip.

If you watch carefully, 16570s pop up just under $4k every so often. Given that Longines aren't exactly cheap, it probably wouldn't take you too long to save.

Go for a tritium 16570, the lume is turning om the early 90s models. Trit sapphires are gaining in appeal for collectors.

Scratch the itch! Save for a bit and get the Explorer II. Good deals can be had on the older 40mms, great value.
