Bit by the 1016 bug
Like the title says after owning a 114270 for the last one year still can't help it, gotta have my grail. Don't get me wrong I love my 114270 but it's nothing like the 1016.
I'm sick, meaning even considered such a heresy that a 1016 dial would be fitted to my 114270. As I learnt it's not possible (thank God, huh?) because of the dial legs are different for the two reference. Anyways it would not be the same if it worked that way. So the chase is on and I was wondering what is your opinion buying 1016s from Asia, particularly Singapore? Typically the prices are a bit lower than in Europe Are there any legit ones? Anyone with some experience willing to share? Thanks a lot! G Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I have to wish you luck my friend.. similar to you I started my Explorer journey with the 114270. Then moving on to the 14270 Blackout + 1016. Yes, I'm deranged.
Of course there are legit ones in Singapore but please expect to pay a pretty penny! |

Thank you Xeer! I hope it brings luck on my hunt I've seen some nice pieces for suspiciously cheaper than usual. Actually I'd be fine with a late series and even if it has a service dial and hands. What matters is that all parts replaced be genuine Rolex. Still quite a challenge ahead I guess. Oh boy haha |

I am glad I bought mine years ago, but even then they weren't cheap, I paid over USD5K for head only and a wrecked dial, it ended up being over USD6500 with a service dial, a service, and a bracelet. Anyway watch out for fake 1016 dials in pretty much any 36mm Oyster case, they are RIFE. Make super sure the case is right as well as the dial if you're crazy enough to buy from a non-approved source. Best of luck

Thanks for the advices so far.
In fact before I'd jump right into a deal I'd like to clarify a few things. I know a 1016 is a collector's piece, but at the same time it was designed to be a sport watch. So can you use a 1016 as your daily wearer? Can you swim in it and do everything it was supposed to when Rolex designed it? Also here are some photos of a 1016 for a possible trade deal. It's a full set from 1986. All original. Keep you posted guys. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I'd say if it is in the right price range.. go for it. Patina brings the price up dramatically, especially if it is even.

With my 114270 for trade it would be just about the price of another 114270 It might sound stupid but I like this ref with a clean black and white look, not a huge patina fan myself and like I said want to USE this watch I mean c'mon it's an Explorer! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I have a 1972 Explorer 1016, serviced by Philip Ridley. I wear it every day but Sunday morning, when I wear my dad's old Lord Elgin to church. I wear the hell out of it. I wear it when I fix things and do chores around and outside the house, unless the chore is guaranteed to knock the Watch around (plumbing, cars). It keeps great time.

Make sure you have the watch pressure tested. You may need to replace the crystal to ensure it's waterproof for swimming. Otherwise it's a great watch, I think suitable for daily wear for sure.
It sounds like a good deal- the full kit 1016 isn't that common! |

Indeed just asked the seller if the watch was pressure tested. I'm still waiting for reply. I agree it's a great deal, let's see if we can seal it soon! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Is it only me or this watch has a flat crystal?
I'm not sure if 1016s were ever issued with flat crystal. To my understanding it should be fitted with a tropic 22, which is a domed one. It must be a service crystal, right? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Good for you OP. Of all my watches, if I had to sell them all and only keep one, I'd keep my 1016. And I have some pretty nice watches

As for the curvature of the crystal, it looks domed to me? Not typically how a sapphire crystal looks. |

Thanks Xeer looking at it again and comparing to my 114270 crystal indeed seems to be domed, maybe not super domed though. I hope to receive the watch latest by Friday. You can bet I'm gonna share some photos. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

This does look like a service crystal but you can get a replacement Tropic T22 from MY for when you eventually get it serviced.

Hey mandonofrio, I'll wait to see when I received the watch. If it comes to that I'll definitely want to replace with a period correct dome crystal. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I actually have a flat service crystal on mine... I personally think it looks good anyway, but I'm planning to replace at the next service.

I might keep mine as well if pressure test results in no need to change. Otherwise I'll surely swap for a domed one. Do you know if this is the domed one? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I think that's the service crystal- the domed version is marked T22 or tropic. A NOS T22 is rare...

The 1016 is one of my favorite references in all of Rolex history. I'm envious of you guys who have one.

Now I'm confused a bit As browsed through the thread you referred to the crystal's packet said to be domed is identical to the photo I shared previously. While the red labeled packet is supposed to be the flatter service crystal. So which one is the domed one then? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
