There are a few things that I would question but I am no 1680 expert. Maybe I'm just the cautious type. I'll let the experts chime in.

The 1680 Red Submariner has always been one of my personal favorites. Every piece has a history which has always fascinated me as a collector. Congratulations on your acquisition. Here’s a photo of mine which was passed on from my father.

Something about that bezel and insert doesn't look right to me. The markings look too small and the flutes on the edge of the bezel look wrong in my opinion. But nobody else has said anything about it so maybe it's just me eyes. Is this the one that had the missing bezel from your other thread?

Awesome chihuahua avatar, platinum574! Love the patina on the dial and hands. You'll find the right bezel, if you want correct. For now, enjoy that beautiful watch!

Indeed, the bezel is nor original imo. The 10 minute points are not "fat"

Thanks everyone! I should have known better.. I guess that is what I get for taking the bezel on myself.

I own a 1680, non-red. I love this watch and favor it over my TT GMT Master II and Platty Yacht Master. It's just classic.

When I purchased a 1680 a few years ago, I took an original-insert risk (bezel was still original). The seller had just had it serviced and the jewelry store receipt indicated "insert and crown replaced due to age", "black leather strap added", and "crystal replaced" on the receipt. I asked the seller if he had the original parts. He was clearly not a watch guy (but had bought the watch new in 1979) and was brutally honest with me. He didn't even know what an "insert" was and said he had whatever they took off the watch and would include with the sale.
I pleaded for photos, but he couldn't even figure out how to email those. The price was too attractive and I told myself I'd source the insert and hope for the best on the bracelet. Low and behold, about a week later, a tiny $6 uninsured box showed up in my mailbox. It had EVERYTHING included. Not a Red Sub, but I stole that watch. I'm kicking myself to this day for flipping it, even though I nearly doubled my initial investment. I've asked the seller to sell it back to me. He had declined (but gave me 1st go should he ever change his mind). 1st photo is from his ad, 2nd is what I got. Sometimes you just get lucky. |

I’ve been coordinating with @Wing Zero about this and you guys are right and I apologize to everyone reading this post. It was an honest mistake. This was a gift to my father which he past on to me last Christmas. I never bothered to have it checked nor serviced as it runs great and feels even more solid than it looks. I in good conscience can’t bare confront my 75 year old man about its legitimacy and authenticity. It’s heart braking as I was merely posing something of pride which I thought had been past on to me. Again, my sincere apologies if I offended anyone with my post. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Hey no need to apologize. Happens to the best of us.
In regards to the OP's bezel, its a service bezel with a mid font 1980s insert. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'd love to buy a mid-font '80s insert for $200, but I think more like $400-$500. The thin-font service inserts are the cheaper ones, from what I've seen anyway. |
