Apple just announced...

That they have finally surpassed Rolex as the number one watch distributor in the world.

This was announced at their event earlier today.

Kind of like saying Ford outsells Lamborghini in the auto market!

Of course they do, completely different market and price point. Apples () to oranges, and far from a fair comparison!

A few years ago at Costco, while shopping, i stopped by their watches display to see what they have (i always do), a guy in his forties with wife, actually civilized looking, next to me said:

"i can't understand who still buys watches when everyone has smart phones"

i said something smartassy, and realized not everyone understands us :)

It's okay, as Rolex and co probably couldn't keep up with the demand LOL

Let'em buy the apples. I have no love for it.

I already look at my iphone 100 times a day, don't need a watch to make me look at electronics even more. Rolex is a watch to give to your kids, trying giving an apple watch to your kids in 25 years...lol

This is where Rolex and the Swiss heavyweights have their advantage, they fail to play it up enough. Patek has that one ad about "keeping it for the next generation", etc. but they made it kinda lame and preppy.

Yet a great number of people still do.

I used to say things like that and hadn't worn a watch in almost 2 decades until I found an appreciation for the mechanical timepiece. You can't explain it to someone with that mindset. Don't even bother trying. You either get it, or you don't.

I'd still pick the no-cellular option; hate being connected 24/7.

I agree. I see quite a few people wearing the Apple watch, but I know they must be carrying their iPhone on them somewhere. I sometimes forget to take my phone with me. An iWatch would be useless in those circumstances.

The cell option will be a hit for runners, cyclists, hikers, and so on... also the potential medical alerts may be beneficial to some as well. Agree this isn't a watch, it's a device. Won't replace my Rolex, but has some nice features now given the cellular option.

I am more interested in the Watch than what I've seen out of the iPhone so far. Lots of neat things in the phone that are upgrades to things in my 6S that I don't use. Though the water resistance is nice to finally have.

At my local mall the other day I saw someone leveraging both brands hehe. Yellow gold Daytona on one wrist, Apple Watch on the other!

I agree with most others (watching the Apple event live as I type this), I view the Apple Watch as a device and it's nice to be unplugged from time to time. A mechanical timepiece is not an Apple Watch and vice versa. I'm interested in picking up the cellular Series 3 Apple Watch for working out at the gym so I don't need my iPhone and that's just about it. Other than the gym, it will be a Rolex on my wrist.

Yep, and it's great that the taste can be acquired and appreciation learned.

Meh, I have nothing against apple watches and people wearing them. Pull it out of a drawer in 5 years and it's worth nothing. At least my Rolex should be worth what I paid for it or close to. Wait even longer and the Rolex will certainly have held its value.

Let's not get carried away, it's still a watch. Sure, it doesn't have many running parts...it tells time and then some.

watch
wäCH,wôCH/

noun
1.
a small timepiece worn typically on a strap on one's wrist.
synonyms: timepiece, chronometer; wristwatch, pocket watch, stopwatch
"Bill looked at his watch"

I'm not the target market for it. I owned a Moto360 for a while, and while it was neat, it didn't really resonate. Lot of grumpiness in here though, for absolutely no reason.

But you wear both of those on your wrist with a strap? It's a different target market, clearly not a lot of us.

No, hence my original post, it's a wrist tablet
