Buying an ebook reader - Advice please

I am buying one and have no idea what to get... Budget $200-$250

1. Kindle Fire
2. Sony eBook

You should absolutely consider the Nook Simple Touch by Barnes and Noble. You can see and hold one at your local store. The price has been reduced to $99 from $139 and it has the highest rating for e-readers in the new edition of Consumer Reports magazine.

Kindle or save up for an iPad

bought a Lenovo IdeaPad A1 the other day and it has Amazon Kindle reader pre-loaded.

havent tried reading on it yet, but at 7", it is a pretty good alternative to the iPad2....

Kindle, but not the Fire. It is a tablet, not a true eInk reader. I would recommend the Kindle Touch. I have owned pretty much every ereader on the market and it is my current favorite.

iPads are great (typing on one) but not for reading (too much glare and heavy). I have a Nook color, great bc I can always search the net if questions arise. But if I did it all over again, I would get the slimmest, lightest and monochromatic available. In other words, it would b a dedicated reading tool. The plus on this is that I believe they r the most affordable these days. Just IMHO.

For reading books I use the basic Kindle, had it about a year, great product.

Depends what you want. If you are looking for a purpose-built e-reader, any of the b&w Kindles are great. For color and light web browsing, the Kindle Fire or color Nook are both worth a look.

if you just want an e-reader, get an e-ink based reader. i prefer kindle because i am tapped into the amazon ecosystem with prime, etc.

the most versatile device is still the ipad, but for pure reading, i prefer the kindle.

My advice is to treat any e-reader purchase like a pre-owned Rolex purchase - buy the seller first.

In terms of e-readers, will you have support if the seller goes belly-up? Amazon and B&N have vertical integration but that means they "own" you lock, stock and barrel.

Apple iPad is less linked to books but has more in the way of other media - music and video.

Just a word to say consider the long-term (2 years+) implications of choices.

Bought my wife a Kindle Fire for Christmas, it is awesome. She has used the kindle I & II, so we have a good baseline comparison.

I use a Samsung 10.1 tablet with the nook app. Something to consider, amazon kindle books are about 1/2 the cost of barnes and noble nook books. Example, paid $16 for my current nook book but could have got it for $7 on amazon.......if you are wondering why I paid more, its cause the kindle app wont work correctly on my tablet.

So, I say all that to say this- kindle fire!!

I have had a Nook for 18 months. I use it for one thing only...to read. That is what it is best at. I use it on vacation and I even take it backpacking with me. If I want to browse the Internet, then I would use a computer or iPad. But for just plain reading a B & W Nook or Kindle cannot be beat.

I have a Kindle Keyboard with free 3G access ..... love it ...... much better for reading books than my iPad (too heavy and lots of glare).

My wife and I both have iPads and with the ebook apps available they are just superb. You can have virtually every ebook reader and the features in them are very good.

X2. Outstanding device. I also have the Barnes &Noble app on the iPad if I want to read there, but the nook e-ink on the simple touch is superb & page turns/responsiveness is excellent.

I'd vote iPad also and rsvrider you should try a Matte finish screen protector I found it greatly reduces glare and is very practical

I bought a Nook color last year as a Christmas present for my wife. She now, a year later, wishes she had asked for an iPad. She's an avid reader but needs more than what the Nook can do for her. Net, net, it's all about your main focus of what you need.

Kindle, hands down. It is the lightest device of all e-readers and all it does, for the most part, is function as a reader. I have an iPad...too heavy and bulky to carry around all day. I have the Kindle Fire...great alternative when the functionally of the iPad isn't needed...but not nearly as comfortable to hold while reading as my Kindle 3.

don't be confused by the tablets like an Ipad/fire for example... these are not for reading books, although they will serve the purpose they are not created equal.
if you want to read a book get a e-reader with digital ink and no back light, if you want to browse the web and play games then you don't want to read a book.

I have a Kindle 2 and I like it.

I like the hard keyboard, which is good for games as well and navigating books.

I haven't had any face time with the other models, but I'm really happy with mine.

I know you are looking for the perfect e reader, but books are versatile and I confess to being a bibliophile.....I have no less than 14 bookshelves in my home and I have several cabinets and closets stuffed full of books.

I have books from my childhood (all of them), my parents books, my grandparents books and an accumulation of 18 years (as an adult) worth of books. I even wrote my own book. My Master's Thesis was actually bound as a book!!! How could I ever live without books???? And I can't seem to stop. I get books weekly delivered to my door from Amazon. I like how they look, how they smell and how they feel. I also can't get electrocuted if I drop a book in the Spa or the Tub.

Yes, I like soaking in a spa with a glass of wine and a good book.

Give me an e reader that is waterproof and I will try it!!!

I got the new Kindle touch (e ink). Love it and much prefer it over the ipad for pure reading.

I love the Kindle. I had a Kindle 1 until it died. I immediately replaced it with a Kindle 2. Both have 3G coverage. I'm looking forward to taking the Kindle 2 to London to see if I can download books from there.

The Kindle is light and the screen is just about book quality. I couldn't begin to carry around as many books as I have on the Kindle.

My wife has a Nook but when that one dies I think she'll go back to the Kindle.

I also have the Kindle app on my BB Torch 9850 as well as on my Fujitsu notebook and Toshiba tablet in case I get caught without the Kindle. The various devices sync pretty well, so I can go from one to the other and be on the right page.

Just got the wife a kindle touch and haven't seen her all night. She seems to be enjoying it and I don't remember the house ever being this quiet. win-win for me.
